The Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security at the Bloomberg School of Public Health works to protect people's health from epidemics and disasters and ensure that communities are resilient to major challenges.

We examine how scientific and technological innovations can strengthen health security. We study the policies, organizations, systems, and tools to prevent and respond to outbreaks and public health crises.

We advance policies and practice to address a range of challenges, including the global rise in emerging infectious diseases, a continued risk of pandemic flu, major natural disasters, our dependence on vulnerable infrastructure, and the potential for biological threats.

The Center seeks a
_Research Assistant_ to provide project support for Faculty projects on an as needed, hourly basis to assist with basic research support functions.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Organize references and materials for research projects and content areas.
  • Write syntheses or briefings on issues as needed.
  • Conduct literature and library searches.
  • Participate in meetings, both internally and externally, and provide notetaking and action point summaries.
  • Support senior researchers on coding of decisiontools.
  • Review and collate internal and external comments, edits and revisions.
  • Conduct basic project managerial duties, as identified by senior researchers.
  • Attend and participate in phone interviews for research project protocol(s) as needed (including transcribing notes and analyzing findings).
  • Assist in data collection and data management.
  • Maintain professionalism in all interactions with stakeholders and internal staff.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Detail oriented, strong organizational skills, and ability to handle multiple projects at once.
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively with other project team members.
  • Able to perform a literature search using medical, scientific and/or social scientific databases.
  • Able to quickly gain necessary background understanding in new project areas.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior work experience in developing risk assessment and planning tools.
  • Prior experience working with external collaborators.
  • Demonstrated interest, volunteer work, student work, or other work experience in public health.
  • Proficient with personal computers, internetbased search methods, and appropriate office, database, researchrelated and/or statistical software.
