ABOUT THE FAIR LABOR ASSOCIATION


The Fair Labor Association (FLA) combines the efforts of industry, civil society organizations and colleges and universities to promote and protect workers' rights and to improve working conditions globally through adherence to international standards.

The FLA is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and has offices in Geneva, Switzerland, and Cote d'Ivoire, Ivory Coast.***FLA seeks a Communications Specialist to develop FLA publications; draft original content; provide editorial support to staff across the organization; collaborate on strategies to promote FLA's research, policy, and program activities; and support FLA's media relations efforts.

This position reports to the Senior Director, Communications.- This is a remote position_, _based in any location in the U.S., where FLA is registered.


FLA currently has staff in the following states:
CA, DC, FL, MD, NV, NY, TX_,_ and VA._


KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Assist with the creation and dissemination of high-quality communications materials (75%).**- Coordinate the development and design of publications including reports, updates, guidance, and issue briefs.

  • Copyedit and lineedit publications and digital content to express ideas clearly and concisely and assure style and quality.
  • Post publications as needed to the FLA website.
  • In coordination with the Director, Digital Strategy, work across the organization to solicit and produce original content for the website and online newsletters, including a biweekly newsletter for members and a quarterly newsletter for partners and other stakeholders.
  • Manage relationships with external design, editing, and printing vendors.

Collaborate with research, policy, and program staff to increase awareness of and generate interest in FLA programs and projects (10%).

  • Participate in the development and implementation of communications plans for program teams and highprofile activities.
  • Support planning, promotion, and execution of member meetings, webinars, and senior staff speaking opportunities, including the development of professional, FLAbranded presentations.

Support FLA's media relations strategy (10%).

  • Develop and maintain media lists.
  • Monitor and track all mentions of FLA in the media, along with news related to FLA members and key fair labor issues.
  • Maintain a library of FLA press coverage.

Other duties (5%).

  • Assists with internal/staff communications projects.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Senior Director, Communications.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • At least three years of experience in in communications and/or journalism preferably in the nonprofit sector.
  • Excellent understanding of the technical aspects of producing and printing publications, including design and layout skills.
  • Experience in translating complex or technical information and concepts into understandable content.
  • A working knowledge of style guides and experience managing organizational branding requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects and production schedules, including working with outside vendors and consultants.
  • Excellent oral/written English language skills; communication skills; detailoriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to take initiative, solve problems, work with mínimal guidance, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to exercise patience and understand others' viewpoints.
  • Interest in causerelated communications and/or corporate social responsibility.
