    Team description

    Block's Client Platform group has one goal: make machine learning at Block easy.

    Block has over 100 engineers and data scientists building machine learning solutions, and our group's job is to support these efforts.

    We build model development tools, feature computation infrastructure, and high scale serving systems to ensure that those trying to use machine learning can spend less time on infrastructure and more time delivering value.


    Within that group, the Data Intelligence (MLDI) team provides systems and tools that help teams transform their data into reusable knowledge so that new Client systems start with access to a large set of prebuilt features.

    To achieve these goals, we own the services that compute real time features and the historical data store that allows models to be trained.

    Our systems have to be tough enough to handle the processing load of all payments at Square, while also being flexible enough to enable data scientists from many teams to do their job.

    Project background

    MLDI is building a cloud-based real time feature store.

    We are replacing an existing feature store, which lives in Block's data center and has a massive footprint due to its scale (~2000 QPS).

    This project started in Q4 2021 and will ideally launch in Q It is built using Java and DynamoDb, as well as GCP PubSub and several other cloud services.

    We just finished the MVP, which validated core functionality, but we still have a significant amount of work remaining to achieve parity between the two systems.

    Responsibilities


    You will work directly with a designated senior MLDI engineer on various projects related to building our new feature store and decommissioning the old one.

    Given that you will be joining a team of six engineers, close coordination is required, so we'd rather you work on shared projects and not separate pieces of work.

    The team operates on a standard two week sprint cadence using Jira and tends to prefer asynchronous written communication over virtual meetings.

    Many team members work remotely full time, so our team practices will remain remote friendly.

    Skills:
    Meaningful experience required in Java and DynamoDb.

    Preferred experience in some of the following:
    RPC frameworks
    WS (SQS, S3, IAM, etc.)
    GCP (PubSub, GCS)
    Hibernate
    jOOQ
    Redis
    MySQL
    Experience working with MacBook

    Education:
