What are Trust Fund Positions?
Trust Fund positions are unique to the Smithsonian.

They are paid for from a variety of sources, including the Smithsonian endowment, revenue from our business activities, donations, grants and contracts.

Trust employees are not part of the civil service, nor does trust fund employment lead to Federal status.

The salary ranges for trust positions are generally the same as for federal positions and in many cases trust and federal employees work side by side.

The Smithsonian Associates is a financially independent educational non-profit business activity within the Smithsonian: funding is derived entirely from ticket sales, tuition, membership fees and fundraising.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


The Smithsonian Associates seeks to hire an accomplished Assistant Director of Advancement with proven fundraising experience to build and manage a portfolio of prospects, donors, and members to execute a fundraising program focused on a range of giving.

The Assistant Director directs Associates' advancement activities, with responsibility for planning and executing major and annual gift fundraising initiatives including individuals, corporations, and foundations.

The incumbent will secure contributions by discovering and cultivating a productive relationship with current and prospective members and donors; presenting opportunities for giving through solicitation efforts; and crafting and implementing a multi-year fundraising plan.

The incumbent works closely with the Smithsonian Office of Advancement to coordinate with colleagues on matters relating to proposals, gift agreements, budgets and reporting, and other policy and process areas.

This position reports to Associates' Director and supervises a high-functioning department including advancement, membership, and communications professionals.
