    PRODiG+ Clinical Post-Doctoral Fellows

    Position Description

    The State University of New York College of Optometry seeks applications from outstanding post-doctoral clinician scientists for an exciting new program for career advancement.

    SUNY PRODiG+ (Promoting Recruitment, Opportunity, Diversity, Inclusion and Growth) fellowships aim to: (1) increase the number and share of excellent diverse faculty committed to advancing the ideals of diversity, equity, and inclusion; and (2) strengthen the pipeline for retention and support of these faculty.

    The PRODiG+ Clinical post-doctoral fellows at the College of Optometry will receive competitive funding for two years of post-doctoral training in clinical vision research and grant development that can lead to a tenure-track faculty position at the College.


    The exemplar candidate for a fellowship in clinical vision research is a recent OD, MD, or PhD interested in a career in clinical vision research and seeking additional training before they can be a principal investigator leading an independent research program.

    The successful applicant will be mentored in clinical research and faculty development by experienced faculty and researchers at the College's Center for Vision Research.

    Qualified applicants may transition into a tenure-track faculty positions where they will be expected to develop and conduct funded research programs in their area of interest, participate in didactic or clinical education in a related area, and participate in the college's MS and PhD programs through appointment in the Graduate Center for Vision Research.


    The SUNY College of Optometry offers an intellectual community of collaborating clinicians, educators, and researchers who work together on basic, translational, and clinical eye and vision research that informs and advances patient care.

    The fellow will join a scientifically vibrant faculty community.

    Areas of basic and translational research currently conducted at the college include ocular anatomy, physiology, and pathology, cell and molecular biology of vision, visual neuroscience, and visual perception.

    Human subject research and clinical trials in a variety of areas including cornea and contact lens, myopia management, glaucoma, retinal diseases, and drug and device testing, are supported through the college's Clinical Vision Research Center.

    The University Eye Center, the College's clinic, has one of the largest and most diverse optometric patient population in the country.

    The College of Optometry and University Eye Center are situated in the center of Manhattan's scientific, medical, and cultural activities.


    PRODiG+ fellowships are open to all prospective candidates regardless of race, color, national origin, or sex, and are consistent with all current governing federal and state nondiscrimination law.

    All application submissions will be assessed and evaluated in accordance with the following eligibility criteria.

    All PRODiG+ candidates must meet the following criteria:

    • Must be eligible to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.
    • Must have completed an OD, MD, or PhD from an accredited institution.
    • Must demonstrate personal, academic, or work experience engaging with diversity, equity, and inclusion or a commitment to facilitating and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the campus community. Such experience may include an academic/scholarly track record focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion; work, volunteer, community service; or related experience in serving underserved or vulnerable areas and populations.

    Preference will be given to candidates who are:

    • from low-income backgrounds,
    • first generation college students,
    • those who have overcome adversity,
    • current SUNY students, alumni, and/or fellows.
    • AmeriCorp alumni, veterans

    PRODiG+ postdoctoral fellowships at the College of Optometry are State-funded position. The College of Optometry is a qualifying employer in the federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program. The first-year salary is $80,000 and including a generous benefits package.
