SUMMARY
Makes inspections of construction projects to ensure compliance with relevant codes and ordinances and does related work as required.

This is technical and skilled work of subprofessional civil engineering nature in the inspection of newly constructed or renovated structures.

Employees in this class inspect construction projects during construction and again on completions of construction to ensure compliance with review plans and specifications.

An employee in this class, with guidance from the Chief Building Official, is expected to learn to perform increasingly more difficult work.

Performance evaluation is based on conciseness of reports and data verified by the Chief Building Official.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Checks the site to verify the submitted plan.
  • Inspects foundations for depth and width, then checks steel for proper size & placement and proper concrete mix; also inspects piling foundations.
  • Inspects each of the construction steps to ensure compliance with the submitted and reviewed plan as well as compliance with the I.B.C.
  • Requests and posts stop work orders if work has been started without a building permit or is not in compliance with codes.
  • Final inspection to ensure that all work is completed to include: F.E.M.A. and N.F.I.P. Codes, and Handicap Code.
  • Investigates, prepares cases, and testifies before administrative and judicial bodies as required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE


High school diploma or general education degree (GED), preferably in the vocational arts with, or supplemented by, courses in blueprint reading and five (5) years of experience as a building inspector, builder, engineer, architect or a supervisor, foreman, or competent mechanic in charge of construction, or equivalent combination of education and experience.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid driver's license.

Must be certified by a National Model Code Group as an Inspector or be able to achieve certification within one (1) year.


OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Working knowledge of inspection methods in carpentry, concrete, roofing, masonry, I.B.C. and report writing methods.


LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the Town.


REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
