    PRE-ALGEBRA COURSE DESCRIPTION:

SPORK Pre-Algebra is a transition between the Arithmetic courses and a two-year Algebra and Geometry series. Students will solidify their arithmetic foundation by further practicing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in the domain of real numbers. In addition, students will practice evaluating powers and roots and will include these in the order of operations. To start developing their abstract thinking, students are introduced to selected algebraic concepts, mainly simplifying and evaluating algebraic expressions and solving linear equations. They are expected to master solving two-step linear equations and to understand how to solve more complex linear equations using the distributive property or combining like terms. In geometry, students practice finding the perimeter and area of complex figures, but they are also introduced to geometric solids and the concepts of volume and surface area. They also construct triangles using a ruler and a compass. Students are introduced to descriptive statistics and the basic principles of probability.

ALGEBRA AND GEOMETRY ONE COURSE DESCRIPTION:

In SPORK Algebra and Geometry I, students continue to practice solving linear equations and apply this skill to solve word problems. Students solve systems of linear and quadratic equations and demonstrate a deeper understanding of the algebraic properties of real numbers. They also practice finding the volume and surface area of various geometric solids. They use algebra to understand the relationship between the dimensions of a solid and its volume or surface area and find the missing dimensions. They also understand the concepts of congruence and similarity and identify congruent or similar objects and apply their knowledge about ratios and proportions to solve problems with similar objects. The overarching focus of the course is on simplifying various algebraic expressions—rational expressions, radical expressions, and polynomials. Students also practice graphing linear equations and inequalities, understanding the meaning of the y-intercept and slope. They will understand the basic principles of probability, including independent, disjoint, and complementary events. They continue to practice finding various descriptive statistics.

ALGEBRA AND GEOMETRY TWO COURSE DESCRIPTION:

In SPORK Algebra and Geometry II, students build on their knowledge and skills obtained in SPORK Algebra and Geometry I. They further practice simplifying algebraic expressions and solving linear and quadratic equations. They now solve systems of up to three linear equations and understand the relationship between two lines defined by linear equations. The focus of the course is on functions--linear and quadratic—including their domain and range, as well as graphing. Students apply their graphing skills to solve quadratic and rational inequalities and inequalities with absolute values. In geometry, the focus is on proofs. After being introduced to the basics of logic, students learn how proofs work and they practice proving the theorems they know from SPORK Algebra and Geometry I. Combinatorics are introduced and students apply it to find conditional probability and solve sampling problems with and without replacement. Students are also briefly introduced to complex numbers, vectors, and trigonometry.

    PRE-CALCULUS A COURSE DESCRIPTION:

SPORK Pre-Calculus A is the first part of a two-year course that covers trigonometry, vectors, complex numbers, exponential and logarithmic functions and equations, rational functions, sequences and series, and conic sections (both geometric and algebraic approach). Combinatorics and probability are also further practiced. In this first course, students review and extend their knowledge about properties of functions. They study the properties of exponential, logarithmic, and rational functions and also graph exponential and logarithmic functions. In trigonometry, the focus is on trigonometric functions in a right triangle and a unit circle. Students also graph trigonometric functions and their transformations. Conic sections are defined as geometric shapes as well as by algebraic equations. Students represent vectors by polar and rectangular coordinates and convert between these representations. They also add and subtract vectors.

    PRE-CALCULUS B COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The prerequisite for this course is Pre-Calculus A. Pre-Calculus B is the second half of a two-year course that covers trigonometry, logarithms, analytic geometry, and upper-level algebraic concepts. Students will complete their study of geometry and will continue the practice of intermediate algebraic concepts and skills and be introduced to upper-level algebraic concepts. Students will continue the study of trigonometry that began in the middle of Algebra 2, focusing on the study of trigonometric functions, common and natural logarithms, and the equations of conics.
