Position Summary:

The Teen Programs Coordinator has a diverse role, working with the Senior Manager of Education to support the supervision and administration of Teen Programs at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.

The Coordinator will be responsible for daily supervision, scheduling, and communications with Counselors in Training (CIT) teens, including facilitating daily debriefs.

The Coordinator is responsible for communications with and supervision of VolunTEENs.

The Coordinator supports the overall Teen Programs Department with logistics, planning, and supervision of the Quasars to Sea Stars program.


Responsibilities:


  • Serve as lead facilitator of CIT program, working with Senior Manager of Education and Nature Adventures Manager to support developmental needs of CITs as needed. Supervise teens volunteering in the CIT program daily.
  • Facilitate daily debriefs with CITs in conjunction with Nature Adventures Coordinator. Report debrief outcomes to Senior Manager of Education and Nature Adventures Manager.
  • Serve as lead facilitator during weekdays for the VolunTEENS program including working with Museum staff to design and execute the training for the program, direct oversight of VolunTEENS when present on campus, and supervision of Quasars participating as youth leaders with VolunTEENS.
  • Onsite oversight of teen participants in Quasars program during work/volunteer shifts and meetings at Mission Creek Campus and Sea Center as needed.
  • Mentor teens in the design of Quasars/ VolunTEENS summer educational guest experiences, working with the Teen Programs Manager and Museum staff to vet and approve all content.
  • Support and assist in planning of Quasars to Sea Stars overnight oneand multiday field trips. Attend select field trips as an adult chaperone.
  • Assist in the planning and operations of Teen Programs special events. Lead in the planning of endofsummer CIT appreciation day.
  • Support the Nature Adventures Manager & Senior Manager of Education by conducting breakdown and organization of materials as needed.
  • Support other needs of the Teen Programs Department as applicable.
  • Contributes to a positive guest experience by greeting and addressing any questions when encountering guests as they navigate through the Museum and Sea Center.
  • Supports the Museum's commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion for fellow staff, guests and the community.

Essential Requirements:


  • Must be able to work Monday
  • Friday, 8:15 AM 4:15 PM or 9:00 AM 5:00 PM.
  • Experience instructing youth and high school students.
  • Experience working and interacting with children, ages 41
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Google Drive/Docs/Sheets, and online research.
  • Willing to complete the Museum background check screening.

Desired Qualifications:


  • Strong organizational and leadership skills, with a proven track record as an effective team member.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal & written).
  • Experience in designing programs or curriculum development.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • MS Office skills.
  • Bilingual fluency, written and oral, a plus.
  • CPR/First Aid certification is preferred.

Work Environment:


  • General office environment with occasional work in a classroom environment throughout the Museum's facilities (exhibit halls, conference rooms, research laboratories and galleries), at the Sea Center facility located on an ocean wharf, and outdoors.
  • Outdoor environments which require traversing, ascending, and descending uneven surfaces and transporting equipment.
  • Share an office with all other teen program participants and staff.
  • Significant telephone and computer work (repetitive movement typing).
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, and climbing stairs with occasional lifting of light loads (15 lbs.).
  • Must be available to work field trips, evenings, and weekends as needed.
