Description
The Benefits Advocate provides professional individual services to people with disabilities through direct services in areas of Government Benefits. The Benefits Advocate is responsible for assisting consumers to navigate different government programs from which they could benefit.

Requirements include having the ability to assess, plan and execute resolutions for issues concerning Government Benefits and other related services.

Responsible for the preparation of required reports. Assists in the community's education on issues affecting systems changes linked to benefits and programs applicable to the participant.


DUTIES:


  • Determines client's eligibility for government benefits programs.
  • Act as a mediator and advocate to assist consumers with optimizing existing community services and refer consumers to community support services.
  • Assist by providing information, case management, and advocacy on programs such as Social Security, SSI, Medi-Cal, Medicare, Cal Fresh In-Home Supportive Services, and other benefit programs from EDD, LA County DPSS, and the Veterans Department. Have knowledge of the rules for work incentive programs.
  • Develop and maintain case files organized with accurate information and documentation required for the appropriateness of the services provided to the consumer.
  • Provide appropriate follow-up services to consumers. Have the ability to create a follow-up method to ensure the consumer meets their goals in their independent living plan.
  • Build networking relationships with the legal and professional communities.
  • Participate in community task forces or advisory committees that address issues of concern to consumers.
  • Develop quarterly trainings on disability-related programs.
  • Do outreach and presentations to community-based organizations and/or community entities.
  • Maintain resources to be available to the community. Understand the consumer control and consumer choice concept.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Essential:_A Bachelor's degree or no less than three years of experience working in a related field with people with disabilities. Generalized knowledge of service provision, including Social Security, Welfare, Employment, etc. Demonstration of good organization, mediation, negotiation, communication, writing and public speaking skills. Demonstrate familiarity with resources for the disabled. Ability to analyze situations accurately and take effective action. Ability to analyze public policy, laws, regulations, and procedures. Ability to work with minimum supervision. Ability to interpret the agency to diverse publics. Ability to coordinate resources, research and take initiative, and maintain quality of service under pressure. Must have a valid California driver's license and proof of car insurance or reliable transportation. Experience with and sensitivity to the needs of people with disabilities.


Pay:
$ $28.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
