    Job Summary:

    Key Responsibilities:


    Define the mission and establish the strategic direction for the Department, in collaboration with the leadership of the University of Colorado School of Medicine and its affiliates.


    Ensure the necessary financial and human resources are available to support the clinical, educational, and research missions of the University.

    Ensure a state-of-the-art education and advanced training of medical students, graduate students, residents, clinical fellows, and postdoctoral fellows.


    Work with the Vice Chair of Research to continue to develop the Department's research portfolio and clinical trials to determine the priorities of the Department and support principal investigators and other faculty in efforts to secure extramural funding.


    Work in partnership with the Director of Finance to monitor the Department's fiscal management, determine the best use of funds per strategic direction and build up clinical reserves and philanthropy to ensure resources for future projects, recruitments, and Departmental needs.

    Recruit, hire, develop, and retain outstanding and diverse faculty. Address system-level factors adversely impacting faculty well-being.

    Ensure an atmosphere of support, inclusion, and equity.

    Be a role model and exemplar for ethical compliance.

    Demand the highest standards of professional conduct throughout the Department.

    Devise a work ethic framework that is productive and respectful of staff well-being.


    Work collaboratively with diverse leaders of the School of Medicine and the Anschutz Medical Campus, including fellow chairs, administrators, faculty, and staff.

    Reinforce campus-wide initiatives to support translational research in all neuroscience-related fields.


    Have a vision aligned with the strategic plan of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, UCHealth and the Anschutz Medical Campus.


    Serve on the School of Medicine Executive Committee and on the board of University of Colorado Medicine, which is a 501(c)(3) corporation that provides practice and business management services for more than 4,500 faculty physicians and advanced practice providers of the School of Medicine.

    Qualifications:

    Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

    Doctorate degree (MD/DO) with board certification in Neurosurgery or related field


    Strong track record of professional accomplishments on a national and international scale with a strong focus on clinical success, education, and research, meeting the requirements for a faculty appointment at the Professor level.

    Previous experience as a division chief, vice chair, or chair of neurosurgery who has developed academic leaders, mentored and developed junior faculty, and identified and recruited diverse students, trainees, staff, and faculty.

    Vision to recognize areas for growth and ability to lead and mentor faculty as they develop opportunities.

    Knowledge to utilize research funding and development trends as they evolve.


    Ability to engage in public relations and philanthropic activities to promote and enhance the visibility of and support for the department.

    The University of Colorado School of Medicine seeks a Chair for the Department of Neurosurgery to provide strategic and operational leadership.

    Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine and serving on the School's Executive Committee, the Chair will be responsible for defining the clinical, research, and educational priorities of the Department as it strives to meet its clinical, teaching, and scientific missions.

    The Chair will have strong clinical leadership experience in an academic setting, along with the ability to successfully recruit, devise and implement innovative clinical and financial frameworks, mentor, collaborate, and understand the ever-changing healthcare environment and operational achievements required to lead the Department into the future.

    The Department of Neurosurgery is a moderately sized department with an outstanding faculty, a stable leadership structure, solid financial footing, and a significant grant portfolio.

    There are approximately 71 paid faculty (including 29 Neurosurgeons, 6 Neuropsychologists, 8 research PhDs, and 28 PAs/NPs.) The Department has $12M in total research funding, including five active R01s.

    There are 15 trainees in our resident group with an annual complement of 2 in addition to 1 additional trainee every other year.

    The Department has GME fellowship programs, most are CAST accredited in Skull Base Surgical, Neuro-Oncology, Complex Spine, Stereotactic and Functional, Neuro-Critical Care, Pediatric Neurosurgery and Endovascular.

    The Chair will be responsible for overseeing and maintaining excellence in the Department's clinical, education and research programs in collaboration with the leadership of the School of Medicine and its affiliates, University of Colorado Medicine (CU Medicine), and University of Colorado Health (UCHealth).

    The position requires excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to bring together diverse groups to advance the common goals of the Department and the institution.

    The successful candidate will be a strong collaborative leader, supportive of diversity, and have a proven track record of administration, education, and research, as well as a keen understanding of the complexities of an academic Department of Neurosurgery and the ability to lead the further growth and development of the Department in all missions.

    The Department chair is expected to work collegially with other chairs and center directors at the School of Medicine and with colleagues at its affiliates.

    Affiliate institutions include UCHealth, Children's Hospital Colorado, Denver Health, and VA Medical Center.

    The Chair will lead the clinical, educational, and research programs of the Department of Neurosurgery, with an emphasis on building excellence, diversity, and collaboration within the School of Medicine and with our broad group of partners.

    The Department's SteeringCommittee provides guidance and support to the Chair on Departmental issues and planning.
