    Summary:

    This position meets the minimum CLIA qualifications of aLaboratory General Supervisor, and under the direction of theLaboratory Director and/or Laboratory Manager, coordinates andmanages the day-to-day operations of their specific section(s) andshift(s). The Laboratory Supervisor serves in an administrativerole with direct reports, and functions in an exempt pay status. Inconjunction with the Laboratory Director and/or Laboratory Manager,this position develops and implements new procedures,instrumentation, quality control, and reagent use. This position isalso responsible for the development and maintenance of policiesand procedures that meet the standards of regulatory agencies andimplements service quality improvements. The Laboratory Supervisorensures all personnel are held accountable through ongoingpersonnel performance reviews and assists in the orientation anddevelopment of personnel competencies for their section(s).

    Responsibilities:


    • Meets expectations of the applicable OneCHRISTUSCompetencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader ofLeaders.

    • Is responsible for providing day-to-daysupervision of high, moderate, and waived complexity testperformance by laboratory testing personnel.

    • Must beaccessible to address technical problems via on-site, telephone, orelectronic consultation with testing personnel at any time thattesting is performed in accordance with policies and proceduresestablished by the laboratory Medical Director.

    •Ensures compliance with all policies, procedures, and standards aspromulgated by state and federal agencies, the hospital, and otherregulatory entities such as CLIA, TJC, CAP, AABB, etc.

    • Plans, organizes and coordinates the work activities of assignedsection(s) and shift(s).

    • Keeps accurate attendancerecords on all associates; maintains time and attendance recordsfor the department.

    • Assists the Director/Manager inmaintaining the Laboratory budget to include monthly analysis andvariance reporting on expense detail.

    • Assists theDirector/Manager in associate performance conversations that drivemerit increases.

    • Develops, implements, and maintainscurrent procedural manuals of all tests performed in the section(s)assigned and updates and reviews manuals biennially or more oftenas necessary.

    • Enforces all safety policies andprocedures.

    • Researches, evaluates, and implements newand improved procedures, methodologies, instrumentation, andtechniques as assigned by the Director/Manager, orSupervisor.

    • Implements an appropriate section and/orshift-specific Quality Control Program and maintains all applicableQuality Control and Functional Verification records.

    •Is responsible for monitoring test analyses and specimenexaminations to ensure that acceptable levels of analyticperformance are maintained. Reviews the work done bytechnologists/technicians working in the section(s) or shift(s)assigned to ensure a minimum of errors and corrective action in theinterest of good patient care. Refers clinical problems to thelaboratory director, manager, or supervisor as appropriate.

    • Assures that all remedial actions are taken whenever testsystems deviate from the laboratory's established performancespecifications. Ensures that patient test results are not reporteduntil all corrective actions have been taken and the test system isproperly functioning.

    • Operates, maintains, andtroubleshoots all equipment in assigned section(s) to keep in goodworking order; makes minor repairs and adjustments when necessary;initiates and follows through with Biomedical Engineering/equipmentmanufacturer for safety checks and repairs; schedules preventivemaintenance within section with Biomedical Engineering, equipmentmanufacturer, or an outside contractor.

    • Prepares andsubmits routine or special administrative and technical reports bydue dates as required, requested, or delegated.

    •Orders and maintains inventories for all necessary supplies andreagents in assigned section(s) to always have an adequate amounton hand.

    • Trains new technologists and technicians inthe assigned section(s) procedures and policies and providessubsequent training in all new or revised procedures and techniquesfor assigned shift(s) or provides remedial training as necessary.Responsible for maintaining orientation records on newassociates.

    • Assists the Director/Manager indesigning, implementing, collecting, and analyzing data, andreporting all phases of a comprehensive performance improvementprogram that involves laboratory personnel in PerformanceImprovement activities.

    • Prepares and conductsin-service education either formally or informally for assignedsection(s) and shift(s).

    • Provides input on personnelfor hire, fire, transfer, interview, disciplinary probation, etc;counsels and documents technical deficiencies.

    •Performs skills review and competency assessments and maintainsappropriate documentation on all technical personnel as delegatedby the Laboratory Manager/Director.

    • Oversees andenforces expectations of personnel in assigned section(s).

    • Participates in proficiency testing surveys; reviews andevaluates results and maintains copies of survey records insection(s).

    • Coordinates and attends meetings asrequired to discuss changes and developments regarding policies,equipment, procedures, staffing, etc.

    • Utilizes andhas a thorough working knowledge of the Laboratory InformationSystem and applications thereof.

    • Demonstratescompetence to perform assigned patient care responsibilities in amanner that meets the population-specific and developmental needsof patients served by the department.

    • Appropriatelyadapts assigned patient assessment, treatment, and/or care methodsto accommodate the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural,age-specific, and other developmental needs of each patient served.

    • Processes patient specimens, including collection,handling, and distribution always cognizant of minimal pediatricspecimen volumes (when required).

    • Performs allroutine and complicated laboratory procedures in the primarysection to which assigned about age (pedi) or sex-specific values.

    • Provides notification and documentation of criticallaboratory values obtained.

    • Calculates, enters,and/or verifies results of laboratory procedures.

    •Performs all duties in a manner that protects the confidentialityof patients and does not solicit or disclose any confidentialinformation unless it is necessary for the performance of assignedjob duties.

    • Keeps abreast of Medical Technology, byreading Journals, texts, and technical bulletins; attends workshopsand seminars; becomes active in local professional associations.

    • Demonstrates adherence to the CORE values of CHRISTUSHealth.

    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Requirements:

    • Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical,biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technologyfrom a regionally accredited college/university or Education thathas been evaluated by an acceptable credentialing agency and deemedequivalent to a US Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical,biological, or clinical laboratory science or medicaltechnology.
    • Five (5) years of experienceas a Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, MedicalLaboratory Scientist, or Medical Laboratory Technicianrequired.
    • Five (5) years of full-timeprimary experience in the specific section of responsibilityrequired.
    • Must provide proof ofcertification or certification eligibility for MT (ASCP), CLS(ASCP), MLS (ASCP), MT (AMT), CLS (NCA/ASCP), or MT(AAB).
    • If certification with anexpiration date is held, the certification must be keptcurrent.
