Description

Summary:

Follows established standard practices: Prepares andstains microscopic slides from specimens of blood, tissuescrapings, and body fluids. Examines cells of the human body todetect evidence of cancer, abnormalities, and other pathologicalconditions. Categories slides, records classification, compileslistings of patients for follow-up analysis, and reports allunusual cell structures or abnormalities to the Pathologist.Addresses all daily operations of the cytology laboratory.

Responsibilities:

• Meets expectations of the applicable OneCHRISTUSCompetencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader ofLeaders.

• Customer Service

• Enters patientinformation, orders, and technical information into LIS.

• Within acceptable TAT guidelines, devises and directsperformance of routine and special stains to provide appropriateslides for the microscopic evaluation of tissues, fluids, and othercytopathology specimens.

• Operates staining equipment,ThinPrep equipment, coverslippers and other AP equipment to providequality slides for examinations.

• Performs manualstains, as needed, to provide quality slides forexaminations.

• Assists Pathologists with fine needleaspirations.

• Using the microscope and stained slides,identifies and mark all unusual findings in the specimen usingaccepted morphologic criteria.

• Examines and evaluatesthe cell sample for the presence or absence of normal/abnormalcellular patterns; assesses malignant, pre-malignant, inflammatory,and benign changes.

• Refers to cellular changes thatmeet guidelines for supervisor and/or pathologist review.

• Quality Control / Improvement: performs analysis andrecords QC according to policy and procedure following CLIA, CAP,and Joint Commission guidelines and standards.

•Maintenance/Lab Management: performs established daily and periodicpreventative maintenance with documentation; troubleshoots minorproblems and initiates service calls as needed; orders and restockssupplies/reagents; reviews policy & procedure manual; datesreagents and discards expired reagents.

• ContinuingEducation/Development: attends, reads, or listens by tape tomaterial of 10-12 in-house educational programs yearly; trains newstaff in practices

• Completes tasks or specialprojects within the time frame as assigned, or as requested bySupervisors, Managers, or Directors.

• Accreditation:follows CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA standards andprepares/participates in all applicable inspections.

•Follows established protocols for safety, infection control,security, compliance, and the use of hazardous materials.

Requirements:

A. Education/Skills

· Bachelor's degree in science or equivalentrequired

B.Experience

· 1-2years of experience required

· 2-3 years ofexperience in high complexity testing in an acute care hospitalsetting preferred

C. Licenses,Registrations, or Certifications

·Cytotechnologist (ASCP) or eligible

· Mustobtain Annual Membership (current) with certificationagency
