    Summary:

    The District Student Wellness Specialist will serve as a liaison between students, families, and school teams to facilitate student wellness activities in schools. The Specialist cooperates with representatives from local partnering agencies in cases of mutual interests including tobacco cessation, mental health support, and life saver training and serves as a member of the District Student Wellness Committee. The Specialist will manage all associated paperwork, arrange for educational facilitators (e.g. school-based Tobacco Treatment Specialists), connect families with needed community resources and provide for follow-up monitoring of students identified as needing support for addiction and cessation programs. This position is funded through tobacco class action settlement funds.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Other duties may be assigned
    • Communicates and works effectively and cooperatively with members of the school district and community to promote student wellness.
    • Collaborates with school student service teams to determine student wellness barriers and design and organize plans, programs, and activities for support.
    • Works effectively with students and their families to connect to school and community based services specifically in the areas of addiction, cessation, and mental health.
    • Demonstrates energy and enthusiasm toward creating an effective program that reduces tobacco use and other negative behaviors impacting student wellness in schools.
    • Collaborates with school Administrators, Counselors, Social Workers, district tobacco treatment cadre, and community resources to develop educational programs for students and their parents.
    • Manages data and keeps records timely and accurately.
    • Learns about the community and wellness resources, school district policies and curricular programs in order to connect and support district and building level efforts.
    • Organizes the monitoring of students/data related to participation in the Tobacco Cessation Program. Supports district tobacco treatment cadre members in schools.
    • Observes and follows all school district policies.
    • Responds to information requests in a cooperative, courteous, and timely manner.
    • Maintains confidentiality with all student and personnel information and records.
    • Implements and follows all District health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
    • Performs other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as directed by supervisor or other administrators as needed.
    Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.     • Valid Kansas License (e.g. Kansas Education License, Kansas Nursing License)
    • Health and Inoculation Certificate on file in the Central Office (after employment offer is made.)
    • Experience in using various computer software applications, specifically filtering data, as well as various office and telecommunications equipment.
    Education
    • Bachelor's degree or above in a field related to nursing, social work, public health, or education; nursing/mental health background preferred.
    Language Skills:
    • Strong oral and written communication skills as well as the ability to articulate a clear and consistent message to multiple constituencies.
    • Public speaking ability required.
    • Multilingual skills preferred. As an organization/community that reflects and appreciates diversity, bilingual communication skills are noted and valued.
    Other Skills and Abilities:
    • Strong organizational and leadership skills.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required and student management software preferred.
    • Ability to work evenings and/or early mornings as needed.
    • Regular travel, locally as needed.
    • Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license and be able to provide own transportation to work sites.
