***- Assists the Chief Communication Officer (CCO) and Director of Media Relations in advancing the mission of the Archbishop of Los Angeles and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles through public relations initiatives, events and media relations with external secular and Catholic media, both traditional and digital.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Because all Archdiocesan employees represent the Roman Catholic Church, they are expected to conduct themselves according to the goals and mission of the Church in performance of their work. Specifically, the Media & Public Relations Manager
  • Represents the Archbishop and the Archdiocese, as instructed by the Chief Communication Officer and Director of Media Relations, in contacts with the external media, especially with Spanishlanguage media.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with digital media bloggers, advocates and influencers across both Catholic and traditional media outlets and profiles.
  • Responsible for developing proactive story angles highlighting the good works of the Church in Los Angeles and regularly pitching traditional and digital media outlets and influencers for inclusion and promotion.
  • Develops articles, profiles, backgrounders, media releases and promotional materials, in Spanish and English, for distribution to external media and for use in Archdiocesan communications channels, including Internet, social media, Archdiocesan newspapers, and audio/visual and digital projects.
  • Assists the Chief Communication Officer and the Director in developing strategies and plans for helping Archdiocesan parishes, schools and ministries, to create communications plans to stimulate public interest and gain support for programs and priorities.
  • Represents the Archbishop, the Archdiocese, Chief Communication Officer and/or the Director of Media Relations in selected interdiocesan relationships and, in cooperation with other members of the Archdiocesan Staff, in contacts with legislative, governmental and community representatives.
  • Provides for contacts and immediate responsiveness to emergencies, at all times.
  • Responds to inquiries from the news media and Archdiocesan personnel in a timely manner at any given time of the day including before and after work hours, weekends and holidays. May refer calls to the appropriate Archdiocesan office.
  • Collaborates with the Director and other office staff in arranging all details for press conferences and other major events including inviting participants; making pitch calls, coordinating accommodations and equipment; and preparing and printing promotional materials.
  • May work remotely but must be available to work all events or situations where media are present, or where assigned, including after and before work hours, weekends, and holidays. Attendance required in office as assigned minimum once a month.
  • Translates materials as assigned for press releases, website, articles, statements, and other content from the Communications Department and other ADLA departments/ministries.
  • Assists Director in preparation and administration of annual budget.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • Any combination of education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, typically:
  • Active member of a Roman Catholic faith community.
  • BA degree in Liberal Arts, Communications or Journalism from an accredited college
  • Three to five years related experience in Media/ Public Relations for a complex organization.
  • Fluent in verbal and written English and Spanish, with Spanish translation experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of:_
  • The Catholic Church, Catholic teaching, and traditions.
  • Archdiocesan principles, practices, and organization.
  • Current issues and conditions affecting the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
  • Principles of organizations and administration.
  • Microsoft programs: Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Word and desktop publishing.
  • Internet and social media.
  • Ability to:_
  • Establish and maintain cordial relations with major media contacts.
  • Display sensitivity to various situations and needs.
  • Analyze situations and use judgment and resourcefulness.
  • Communicate effectively and fluently in written and oral form in both English and Spanish.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Maintain confidentiality.

Physical and Environmental Requirements:


  • Occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Sit/Stand for sustained periods of time on a daily basis
