    Job DescriptionSTAFF GIS DATA SCIENTIST

    Summary

    The Staff GIS Data Scientist (Staff Scientist) is responsible for working with the Foundation's staff, grantees, and other conservation partners to assist in the development, management and implementation of NFWF's Geographic Information Systems to support outcome-based monitoring strategy for the Foundation's conservation programs.

    Under the supervision of the Senior Data Scientist (Senior Scientist), the Staff Scientist will contribute to the creation of new combinations of people, processes, methodologies, and ideas that will lead to breakthrough approaches to collect, manage, and analyze high quality spatial data to describe conservation trends affecting NFWF programs. The Staff Scientist will work closely with science and program staff to implement standardized protocols to collect, analyze, and clean spatial data to monitor, measure and communicate our impact and to foster organizational learning in accordance with the Foundation's vision and strategic plan.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Under the supervision of the Senior Scientist, the Staff Scientist will:

    • Produce maps and other data visualization products that effectively communicate the results of spatial and non-spatial analyses.
    • Manage and create ArcGIS Online content for the Science and Evaluation team.
    • Compile, analyze, prepare, and manage NFWF spatial data. Support the identification and compilation of program data, grant data, and external data required to ensure NFWF can track progress towards strategy, habitat, and species goals.
    • Assist in the development and refinement of grant mapping tools.
    • Collaborate with the science and evaluation team, IT, Director of Program Operations, the conservation programs team and the CCO to contribute to the Foundation's conservation framework and goals.
    • Collaborate with the Science and Evaluation team and Director of Program Operations to establish and implement procedures for spatial data collection including quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC).
    • Collaborate with the communications team to disseminate results and lessons learned from NFWF initiatives through various media, as appropriate.
    • Support in improving grant-making systems for capturing, managing, and reporting project and program-scale conservation data for use in dashboards.
    • Assist in the preparation of reports, briefing materials, and recommendations to support decision making by the Foundation's Board.
    • As appropriate, coordinate activities of outside spatial data consultants.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS)

    • Bachelor's degree with two years of work experience in geographic information systems. Previous experience with GIS analysis and data visualization is required. Preference will be given to applicants with a background in conservation science.
    • Proficiency with ESRI ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online, and relational databases.
    • Ability to organize and prioritize work and meet deadlines.
    • Strong speaking and writing skills.
    • Strong interpersonal skills.

    PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Master's degree in geospatial information sciences.
    • Experience with ArcEnterprise (administration for a small to medium sized organization, tool/application development).
    • Experience developing dashboards in Tableau or ESRI.
    • Intermediate (or higher) experience writing code in Python, R, and SQL.

    COMPENSATION

    Commensurate with experience.
