Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 3:30pm, with occasional weekends and evenings.

Position Summary:


The Facilities and Maintenance Assistant joins with the Maintenance Supervisor under the Director of Operations to perform preventive and corrective maintenance and repairs on Lotusland's equipment, historic buildings and outdoor features including ponds and swimming pools.

Duties include plumbing, electrical, painting, light carpentry, masonry, etc., as well as general repair and maintenance of landscape equipment (hand tools, gas and battery-operated equipment and utility carts, etc.).


Specific Responsibilities:


  • Responsible for maintaining the water features of the garden (i.e., historic fountains, pools, and ponds). Maintain mechanicals of the pondsfilter, pumps, plumbing and repairs. Maintain pools and fountains mechanicals and chemicals with special attention to the protection of unique historic elements and tile.
  • As assigned, performs preventive and corrective maintenance and repairs of grounds and facilities equipment (includes gas and electric powered small engine equipment, tractor, truck, etc.).
  • As assigned, performs maintenance and corrective repairs of structures, utilities, and related LL facilities (includes greenhouse/nursery facilities, garden hardscape features, offices, residences, and storage areas, etc.).
  • Trains on the operation and safety procedures pertinent to use of all tools and equipment for facilities maintenance.
  • Maintains the historic garage/shop and storage areas in a clean and orderly manner. Responsible for trash, recycling, and light janitorial duty on campus.
  • Tracks and informs Facilities and Equipment Maintenance Supervisor of supplies needed fuel, supplies, etc.
  • Coordinates the setup, support and breakdown of tables, chairs, A/V, decorations, etc. for meetings, events, classes, photo shoots, etc.
  • Assists events and other staff as directed.
  • On occasion, this role will supervise volunteers, community service workers, interns, and contractors.
  • Hours include working occasional weekends and oncall shifts.
  • Follow safety precautions and wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required.
  • Monitors and helps trap rodents in buildings and uses preventative measures to exclude rodents from buildings
  • Keeps detailed reports of all maintenance performed
  • Record keeping:
  • Submits timely reports of observations, maintenance, and practices
  • Records all material usage
  • Works independently and with garden staff and Facilities and Equipment Maintenance Supervisor

Knowledge and Abilities:


  • Proficient in use and safety practices of various hand tools and power equipment.
  • Properly maintains and stores tools and supplies
  • Works with the Archives Preservation Manager recommendations to follow policies in the specialty care and maintenance of nonliving collection including but not limited to ponds and pools, tiles, preservation of elements on the historic property, and the best practice in treatment of artifacts throughout the property.
  • Must be able to lift heavy objects repeatedly, (50 lb. minimum lifting requirement)
  • Must possess a valid California driver's license
  • Has pool certification or will obtain certification within 6 months of hire. Lotusland will pay for the certification.

Work Environment:


  • Lotusland's administrative offices are on a historic 2story estate in a 37acre garden.
  • 90% of the day will be spent outside on the grounds.
  • Frequent walking, kneeling, bending, lifting (50 lbs.).
  • Will need to drive a cart.
  • Breaks and lunch are taking altogether with the team.
