Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Year Round Student Nurse Extern(Not Summer)-Constant Observation(Float Pool)-Min of 23 hrs/mth.
Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates an understanding of the rationale and basic principles of assigned patient's treatment/care procedures.
- Participates in unitbased quality initiatives under the guidance of a registered professional nurse.
- Recognizes own limitations and requests assistance when needed.
- Seeks learning resources for identified learning needs.
- Observes patient teaching.
- Participates in classroom or unitbased educational learning activities.
- Functions as a respectful member of the health care team.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the NYUMC's Service Standards and incorporates them into the performance of duties.
- Cooperates and interacts with the interdisciplinary team members when carrying out patient care.
- Completes written documentation of these activities and observations, obtaining cosignature by the supervising registered nurse.
- Assumes responsibility for observing patient/family responses, changes in patient condition, results of procedures performed and reports same to the designated registered nurse.
- Participates in the planning and evaluation of nursing care by active participation in conferences.
- With additional training and demonstrated competency, may also be permitted to perform the following clinical functions and treatments: Obtains 12 lead EKGs. Uses a glucometer.
- Verbally and nonverbally communicates support and responsiveness to patients, families, and other staff.
- Supports patient's privacy and confidentiality.
- Observes and reports changes in the patient's condition and environment to the registered nurse.
- Observes the nursing process, i.e., assessment, documentation, planning, interventions, and evaluation under the direction of the registered nurse.
- Demonstrates basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide ageappropriate care by identifying physical, psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, religious, and development needs, and adapting interventions accordingly.
- Utilizes the written patient care plan/clinical pathway to deliver patient care.
- Provides oral suctioning and mouth care.
- Performs intake and output.
- Applies clean dressings.
- Measures vital signs.
- Incorporates infection prevention/control guidelines, and risk management in patient care.
- Provides assistance to patients with activities of daily living and encourages appropriate selfcare.
- Utilizes nursing interventions to prevent the complications of bed rest and immobility.
- Provides for hygiene, safety, and comfort needs of assigned patients.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a To qualify you must be a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior enrolled in a Bachelors of Science Nursing program.
BLS Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) is required.
Demonstrates physical stamina, manual dexterity, visual and aural acuity to perform responsibilities.
Preference given to those with a 3.5 GPA or higher.
Required Licenses:
Basic Life Support Cert
