The International Student Advisor at the Northwestern Buffett Institute for Global Affairs' Office of International Student and Scholar Services will serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) as determined by the U.S.

Department of Homeland Security, and an Alternate Responsible Office (ARO) as determined by the U.S. Department of State.

Specifically, the Advisor will be responsible for:

Advising and Counseling:

Advising F & J international students and the campus community on relevant federal immigration regulations and federal agency guidance; offering immigration advising based around individual student concerns, academic planning, course selection, and career development.


Policy Interpretation and Compliance:

Interpreting university policies and procedures related to international students and ensuring compliance with federal regulations governing international student enrollment and visa status.


Student Support:

Serving as a point of contact for students facing challenges, offering guidance, resources, and referrals to appropriate university services; collaborating with various university departments to coordinate support services and ensure a seamless experience for international students; assisting with the international student transition experience as well as co-curricular programs, activities and events for the international community.


Specific Responsibilities:


  • Advise F and J students on immigration regulations, maintaining immigration status, university policy and other related issues.
  • Assist in maintaining SEVIS, Terra Dotta and PeopleSoft/SES databases
  • Collaborate with academic departments to support international students.
  • Consult on communications, resources and events for international students, internal team members and/or institutional stakeholders
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:
(Education, experience, and any other certifications or clearances)


  • Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, Humanities, Information Systems or related field;
  • 12 years of experience in international education in an educational setting;
  • Knowledge of all student visa categories and federal regulations.
  • Experience with student and/or scholar programming in a multicultural environment.
  • Must be U.S Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident and meet Department of Homeland Security Designated School Official requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:
(Education and experience)


  • Master's degree in a related field
  • 2 years of direct experience with F and J regulations and SEVIS system
  • Fluency in a global language other than English
  • Experience in designing and delivering large group presentations, workshops and professional meetings.

  • Proficient in database management and data analysis
  • Demonstrated knowledge of trends in international education

_ The target hiring range for this position will be between __$56,000 to $60,000 per year._
_ Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data._
