    Departmental Overview

    The Innovative Genomics Institute is a joint effort between the Bay Area's leading scientific research institutions, UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco, with affiliates at UC Davis, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Gladstone Institutes, and other institutions. The IGI's diverse group of leading scientists have powerful interdisciplinary expertise. They conduct world-class research, driven by the real possibility of using genome engineering to treat human diseases, end hunger, and respond to climate change.

    In addition to our scientific efforts, the IGI is committed to advancing public understanding of genome engineering, providing resources for the broader community, and guiding the ethical use of these technologies.

    Responsibilities

    • Establishes and changes laboratory policies, processes, and procedures as they relate to current SARS-CoV-2 testing and future developments in that space.
    • Balances the facility funds and authorizes all purchases with the IGI FA within the confines of the intended use of philanthropic and campus provided funding.
    • Performs the function of system administrator for the LockBox laboratory information system and directly programs the system and develops it as needed.
    • Resolves deviations and incident reports when they arise.
    • Monitors the quality control program to ensure all processes are followed including record documentation and validation of all lab results to CLIA CAP stringency.
    • Ensures adherence to laws and regulations pertaining to laboratory inspection, safety, and licensure.
    • Monitors and directs all API processes and inspections.
    • Leads project design for research and development for new assays for SARS-CoV-2 or future gene editing and NGS assays.
    • Conducts reviews of current processes and recommends and guides clinical validation of new workflows autonomously.
    • Performs research in the area of diagnostics and clinical assay development including development of assays to determine the safety and efficacy of treatments developed for genetic disease and rare and neglected diseases as well as algorithms to determine prioritization of diseases to potentially cure.
    • Oversees the activities of the clinical lab scientists and support staff of the clinical lab.
    • Manages staffing, budget, testing robustness, provider management, LIS system integrity and development, and all research and development.
    • Meets with staff (both individually and as group) regularly to ensure goals are being set and met, learning and skill are up to date and in line with current practice.
    • Leads staff meetings at lab and leads report out on lab related topics at all staff or management meetings.
    • Works in the lab performing the clinical assays and reporting results to providers only when others are not available.
    Required Qualifications
    • Thorough knowledge of clinical laboratory operations and procedures and related lab information systems.
    • Broad skills associated with managing clinical laboratory and performing clinical functions.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills; strong ability to work in a collaborative manner.
    • Strong decision-making, problem solving and critical thinking skills.
    • Ability to establish priorities, timelines and delegate work assignments.
    • Knowledge of electronic / medical records systems.
    • Computer literacy.
    • Strong knowledge of laboratory quality assurance and quality control procedures.
    • Strong knowledge of the principles and practices of management and supervision.
    Education/Training/Licenses:
    • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent work experience/training.
    • Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license issued by the California State Department of Health.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Strong knowledge of fiscal and HR-related policies and procedures.

    Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

    The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $150, $200,700.00.
    • This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
    • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
