Research Laboratory Assistant

GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT

The Endocrine Research Unit at the Massachusetts General Hospital, affiliated with Harvard Medical School, is focused on basic and translational research in the field of metabolism and endocrinology.

The most important overall characteristics we are looking for is enthusiasm, good work ethic, collaborative mindset, and a willingness to learn.

The primary responsibilities will include routine cell culture work, carrying out molecular biology protocols for animal genotyping, and preparation of samples for mass spectrometry analysis.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties will include:

Routine molecular biology work with cell culture, cell culture assays, PCR, and enzyme activity assay
Preparation of samples for mass spectrometry analysis.
Working with a team to improve and/or develop microscopy imaging algorithms and instrumentation
Storing and organizing data files.
Working with a team to analyze the data and to improve and/or develop data processing algorithms
Organize/draft material for the preparation of presentations and publications
Maintain laboratory notes on a regular basis
Maintain instruments and laboratory equipment as assigned
Assist with inventory of research supplies
Perform other work as needed

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

Ability to complete molecular biology protocols and run DNA and protein gels
Ability to work aseptically with cell culture lines
Ability to handle small animals such as mice
Ability to perform calculations to prepare buffers and titrate drugs
Ability to keep accurate and timely records
Ability to troubleshoot assigned experiments

EXPERIENCE

Preferred: 1 year of Experience with basic laboratory skills

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Minimum:
High School Diploma

Preferred:
Bachelor's Degree in Science or Certificate in Biotechnology.
