Description

Saint Paul Parish in Hingham is a very active Catholic church with a parish school, rectory, parish house and cemetery that is seeking a groundskeeper / facility assistant.

The primary goal will be maintaining attractive and safe areas for our parishioners and students.

In addition to the grounds keeping appropriate to every season, the position requires cleaning, assisting with set up and break down of events, and occasional handy work.

The cemetery requires daily wellness checks and maintenance.

The position is a full time with hours from approximately 7am to 4pm. There will be an occasional request for availability for special events and some weekends as needed with advance notice.

This person reports to the Facilities Manager with support to the Pastor, Business Manager, Directory of Ministries, Cemetery Coordinator, and School Principal.

Responsibilities:


  • Maintain lawns and garden beds cut, remove weeds, fertilize, maintain flower beds and garden.
  • Leaf removal of all parking lots, playgrounds and sidewalks; rake two playgrounds
  • Snow removal including plowing and shoveling snow from church/school parking lot, walkways and cemetery
  • Church requires daily wellness check; clean and vacuum the church after weekend Masses and special church services; thoroughly clean biweekly; maintain restroom daily
  • Set up for special events, weddings and funerals; assist with tent set up in warm weather months
  • Cemetery requires daily wellness check; empty trash; remove debris and funeral flowers; install veterans' markers; trim property edges as needed
  • Assist with school traffic flow on a daily basis during the school year

Other Functions:

Deliver various items (e.g., supplies, mail, packages, furniture, etc.) to the appropriate parties.


Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g., facility damage, alarms, etc.) and takes appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintaining a functioning environment.


Inspects facilities to ensure site is suitable for safe operations and kept in an attractive and clean condition, and identifies any repairs that may be necessary due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.


Performs work at heights of up to 12 feet using ladders for the purpose of cleaning, changing light bulbs, replacing ceiling tiles, candles, etc.


Prepares facilities for daily operations (e.g., opening gates, building, and access doors, raising flags, minor repairs, etc.) so that facilities are operational and safe.

Occasional support / back-up to the school custodian during lunch times and special events.


Requirements:


  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors throughout the year.
  • Must possess manual dexterity, coordination and strength to be able to lift heavy objects.
  • Ability to work well with staff, parishioners and school students.
  • Operate various types of equipment including power mower, weed wacker, hedge trimmer, power tools, etc.
  • Valid driver's license to operate truck and attachments used to maintain grounds as needed.
  • Possess mobility and physical strength consistent with essential job functions.
  • Able to lift, carry, push, pull objects weighing more than 50 lbs.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage tasks in a timely manner.
  • Comfortable working in church and school settings and able to respect related rituals and practices.
