The RWTH Aachen trains process technologists in the field of metallurgy, specializing in either iron and steel metallurgy or non-ferrous metallurgy. The content of the apprenticeship is tailored to the chosen specialization.

Specialization in Iron and Steel Metallurgy

Process technologists in the field of iron and steel metallurgy are experts in the production of pig iron and steel. They primarily work in blast furnaces and steel mills, producing pig iron, steel and ferroalloys, as well as pipes and steel bars. They may also work in foundries, and some may prepare iron or steel in recycling plants.

Specialization in Non-Ferrous Metallurgy

Process technologists in the field of non-ferrous metallurgy melt and refine non-ferrous metals. They mainly work in smelting plants that produce metals such as aluminum, lead, zinc, or nickel, as well as in foundries. They may also work in recycling plants or for manufacturers of tools or parts for automobiles and their engines.
