    Description

    The Coding Specialist will ensure proper processes are in place for the efficient and accurate handling of charge capture and coding.

    This position will evaluate medical records and charge tickets to ensure completeness, and accuracy.

    The Coding Specialist will be expected to be the expert in coding ASC procedures and guidelines in compliance with federal, state and payer requirements and regulations.


    SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Participates in facility specific training as required.
    • Evaluates medical record documentation and charge-ticket coding to optimize reimbursement by ensuring that diagnostic and procedural codes and other documentation accurately reflects and supports outpatient visits and to ensure that data complies with legal standards and guidelines.
    • Follows the established protocol for coding services and provides insight for policy and procedure revisions to stay in line with best practice standards.
    • Reads and understands operative reports.
    • Assigns CPT and HCPCS procedure code for each case in a timely manner.
    • Questions physicians' offices or business office coordinator regarding any complex and/or unusual cases.
    • Understands concept of unbundling and heeds government and payer regulations.
    • Assigns diagnosis codes to the highest level of specificity.
    • Enters all codes, charges and supplies into software.
    • Understands Medicare/payer groups rules and regulations.
    • Understands and abides by billing compliance regulations.
    • Understands anatomy.
    • Appends bilateral, multiple procedure, and special requirement modifiers appropriately.
    • Completes coding form.
    EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, LICENSURE,


    REGISTRATION:
    College degree or equivalent of four years in coding/billing work experience.
    EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and


    ABILITIES:

    • Minimum of five years' experience in coding.
    • Coding Certification from an accredited program is required.
    • Knowledge of CPT/ICD 10-cm and HCPCS.
    • Extensive knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
