Overview:


The Central Sterile Technician assumes responsibility for decontamination, cleaning, processing, and sterilization of supplies, instrumentation and equipment dispensed to all surgical locations and other house-wide areas.

Participates in receipt, storage and distribution of supplies needed for Operating Room case carts as well as single supplies needed by patient care departments throughout the facility.


Qualifications:

Must possess:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 1 year of experience in a Central Sterile Processing department
  • Graduation from an accredited CSS training program is preferred

Certification Requirements:

  • Certification in Central Sterile Reprocessing is required

Must possess skills in:

  • Instrument decontamination, processing and assembly
  • Must be able to accurately type words per minute
  • Must be computer literate
  • Able to learn within 6 months
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language in an understandable manner
  • Must be able to work independently and possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action
  • Must possess the ability to effectively communicate and deal tactfully with other personnel, visitors, patients, physicians, customers, and the general public
  • Must be flexible, have personal integrity, and the ability to function effectively as a team member
  • Must be able to follow written and oral instructions

  • Willing to seek out new principles and methods, and be willing to incorporate them into CSS practices
  • Conscientious in regard to technical and detailed procedures
  • Possess a thorough knowledge of medical terminology and nomenclature of sterilization procedures and techniques
  • Able to work successfully with computers and instrument management systems
