Overview:

The Central Sterile Technician assumes responsibility for decontamination, cleaning, processing, and sterilization of supplies, instrumentation and equipment dispensed to all surgical locations and other house-wide areas.

Participates in receipt, storage and distribution of supplies needed for Operating Room case carts as well as single supplies needed by patient care departments throughout the facility.

Qualifications:

Must possess:

High School Diploma or GED
1 year of experience in a Central Sterile Processing department
Graduation from an accredited CSS training program is preferred

Certification Requirements:

Certification in Central Sterile Reprocessing is required

Must possess skills in:

Instrument decontamination, processing and assembly
Must be able to accurately type words per minute
Must be computer literate
Able to learn within 6 months
Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language in an understandable manner
Must be able to work independently and possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action
Must possess the ability to effectively communicate and deal tactfully with other personnel, visitors, patients, physicians, customers, and the general public
Must be flexible, have personal integrity, and the ability to function effectively as a team member
Must be able to follow written and oral instructions

Willing to seek out new principles and methods, and be willing to incorporate them into CSS practices
Conscientious in regard to technical and detailed procedures
Possess a thorough knowledge of medical terminology and nomenclature of sterilization procedures and techniques
Able to work successfully with computers and instrument management systems
