Position Information:


Excellent Opportunity to Work with the Local Government in a Multicultural Community


The Arlington County Board is seeking a
Board Aide to be part of a team assigned to provide primary administrative support to one of the five elected County Board members.


The employee reports to and receives work assignments, guidance, and performance feedback from the Clerk of the County Board and the assigned County Board Member.


Specific duties include:

  • Providing administrative support for the County Board Member's community initiatives to include maintaining the calendar, managing the schedule of the Board member, tracking issues, attending and taking notes at meetings and followingup on items, assisting in the preparation of talking points, researching information, responding to calls from news media, and identifying time sensitive issues and bringing them to the Board member's attention;
  • Providing support for officewide projects and assignments as well as performing or coordinating office functions;
  • Developing and maintaining open working relationships with directors and division chiefs within County government, and with other elected officials, both locally and regionally;
  • Interacting with local, regional, state and national groups to support Board Member's affiliations, and serving as a regional liaison; and
  • Providing support in policy areas and initiatives, coordinating with the regional and statewide board /organizations, and tracking, researching and analyzing specific issues on the county, regional, statewide and national level.

Selection Criteria:


Minimum:

Associate's degree or equivalent college coursework, in public administration, business administration, or field directly related to program area, plus some experience providing administrative support to an executive or elected official which included composing correspondence, typing reports, scheduling appointments and maintaining an appointment calendar, and/or researching policy areas.


Substitution:
Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the Bachelor's degree requirement on a year for year basis. A Master's Degree in a related field may be substituted for up to six months of experience.


Desirable:
Preference may be given to applicants with experience and skills in one or more of the following:

  • Fluency in Spanish and other languages;
  • Working directly with the public, in person, in writing and over the telephone;
  • Tracking and coordinating projects to completion;
  • Using Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Outlook; and/or
  • Previous experience working for public officials or in a legislative environment.

Special Requirements:

This is a limited term position based on the term of the assigned County Board member. This non-partisan position is in the non-competitive service.

The pay and benefits are identical to an employee in the competitive service; however, the employee is not covered by the merit system.


The examination process for this position may include: (1) training and experience evaluation; (2) written and oral examination; (3) personal interview; (4) performance test/work sample; and/or (5) physical examination.
