    JOB SUMMARY:

    Under the direction of the President, the Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) and Dean of the College of Arts, Sciences and Business (CASB) is the chief academic officer responsible for the oversight of the university's academic programming, academic support services, academic-wide policies and processes, and management of the College of Arts, Sciences and Business.

    This position has responsibility to maintain academic excellence, to promote teaching excellence and scholarship among the faculty, and to foster effective communication among and between administration and faculty.


    This position is responsible for the leadership and performance of the College of Arts, Sciences and Business, managing the ongoing operational, financial, and personnel activities of the college, and leading the faculty of the college in all academic matters, including continued development of goals, policies, strategy and program planning and evaluation, outreach, and partnerships.

    This position supervises faculty and staff of the Office of Academic Affairs and College of Arts, Sciences, and Business.


    Working with the other members of the President's Cabinet, this administrator helps articulate and implement the university's strategic plan as well as develop and manage the strategic plans for the College of Arts, Sciences and Business, and Academic Affairs.

    This administrator may provide regular reports to the Board of Trustees and its committees as requested and will serve as administrative liaison to the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board.

    Major Responsibilities/Activities

    The role of this position includes but is not limited to the following responsibilities:

    Shares the responsibility forarticulatingthe Catholic, Franciscan values to the faculty, staff, and University constituents.


    Recommends strategies to the President and Cabinet to promote academic excellence, support institutional values, and fulfill the overall University mission and vision.


    Collaborates with Human Resources, Development, Enrollment Management, Marketing and Alumni Departments to seek external funding, recruit and retain high quality faculty and students, promote the college, and develop strategies to engage alumni.

    Collaborates with the other administrators to examine and resolve broad academic organizational issues.


    Coordinates Academic Affairs overall including, but not limited to accreditation, academic portfolio assessment and management, finances, staffing, policies, and shared governance.

    The VPAA has overall responsibility to assure the implementation of quality academic programs and oversees the development, revision, and implementation of Academic Affairs academic policies.


    Works closely with the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board and supports the effective function of the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board by assisting the chair to prepare agendas and determine priorities for committee action.


    Directs the Colleges of Arts, Sciences and Business and facilitates achievement of the college mission and strategic objectives and articulates a college vision to the University community and external constituencies.


    Serves as both CASB's and Academic Affairs' overall principal spokesperson, articulating their shared vision, qualities and distinctiveness to the university community and external constituencies (e.g., faculty, students, advisory board members, administrative departments, alumni, and civic and business leaders).

    Is involved in the local community and serve as a resource to the local community and oversees Advisory Councils that provide for regular connections between community organizations and faculty.


    Expands grant opportunities in partnership with thegrant'soffice and faculty, and assists as needed with proposal development, implementation, evaluation and reporting.

    Responsibility to the President

    Makes recommendations to the President regarding all faculty matters.

    Can act on behalf of the President in their absence.

    Meets regularly with the President to keep them appraised of current issues and developments.

    Prepares administrative evaluative reports annually.

    Participates in activities on and off campus as representative of the University.

    Supervisory Responsibilities


    Develops and executes strategies to recruit and retain high quality employees to the Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) and CASB.

    Coordinates with Human Resources, the appropriate Program Directors/Division Directors to hire and onboard faculty and support staff for programs across Academic Affairs and CASB.

    Oversees the process to orient new faculty to the college and academic division or program.


    Oversees the college structures for mentoring in teaching roles, professional development and scholarly activities, the peer development process, and the process of preparing and applying for promotion and/or tenure.


    With the Director of Human Resources and the Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness, maintains a system of personnel evaluation, including annual performance review by Division or Program Directors, student course evaluations, and faculty and staff feedback.

    Oversees an annual performance review process for all employees in Academic Affairs.


    Makes recommendations to the President regarding the appointment, promotion, retention, sabbatical, leaves, tenure, and termination of faculty (full-time, part-time, and adjunct).

    Performs all supervisory functions, including the annual performance review, for positions assigned as direct reports to the position from the Office of Academic Affairs and College of Arts, Sciences and Business, such as

    Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs

    Dean of Student Academic Support

    Registrar

    Director of Assessment and Accreditation

    Director of Institutional Research

    Director of Franciscan Core Curriculum

    Executive Assistant to the VPAA/CASB Dean

    Directors of the divisions within the College of Arts, Sciences and Business


    Oversee the process of calculating faculty workload across CASB and assignment of appropriate teaching assignments for faculty according to faculty academic and experiential qualifications and program needs.

    Leadership


    Provides leadership to Academic Affairs sectors and CASB divisions and programs in development and implementation of vision and in the preparation of annual and long-range action plans through collaborative development of specific goals, objectives, and strategies to take the university to its next level of academic excellence.


    Encourages communication, collaboration and innovation among faculty and staff within Academic Affairs and CASB alike to meet goals, encourage effective team building and promote morale.

    Serves as the chair of the Academic Affairs Council.


    In collaboration with the Vice President for Healthcare Relations/Dean of the College of Health Sciences, holds Academic Affairs-wide assemblies at least once per semester, generally mid-August, early January, and early May, to share information and present important projects, developments and strategies, encouraging communication and collaboration among university constituencies to meet college goals.

    Co-Chairs the Academic Affairs Budget Subcommittee with the Vice President for Healthcare Relations/Dean of the College of Health Sciences.


    Regularly holds collaborative CASB-leadership and all-CASB meetings focusing on college management, evaluation, and improvement in alignment with university goals and the strategic plan.

    Regularly communicates with faculty.

    Holds meetings with all faculty as deemed necessary, including regular reports at Faculty Forum.

    Enrollment Management and Marketing


    Collaborates with the Vice President for Enrollment Management (VPEM) and Marketing Director on the development of an annual enrollment management plan.

    Provides effective leadership of student recruitment for CASB in collaboration with the VPEM.

    Collaborates with the Marketing Department to develop approaches to the marketing of academic programs, including appropriate budget to support marketing goals.


    Collaborates with the President, President's Cabinet, and others for research and analysis of the university's marketing mix for academic programs.


    With the Dean for Student Academic Support, monitor student retention for all academic affairs and develop strategies for improvement and assure effective academic advising of students enrolled in CASB.

    Academic Programs and Curriculum Responsibilities

    Oversees the development, revision, and implementation of academic policies specific to CASB or common to all academic programs.


    Oversees and supports the initiation, development, data-driven assessment, and revision of CASB academic programs and curriculum, and develops new programs in collaboration with campus leadership.

    Leads the Academic Program Review process and committee, and collaborating with the President, President's Cabinet, and others for academic program review, development, and prioritization, including new program development, revision of programs, and inactivation of programs.


    Collaborates with the Director of Assessment and Accreditation who is responsible for the preparation of accreditation reports to assure on-going university accreditation and specialty accreditation of CASB academic programs.

    Supports Program Directors/Division Directors in accreditation planning, preparation and evaluation activities and ensures programmatic compliance with all accreditation requirements and standards.


    Collaborates with administration responsible for issues related to human resources, university technology services, safety, security, and risk management to assure adequate resources and services in these areas.

    Fosters the development and implementation of strategies to promote student retention.

    Collaborates with Program Directors/Division Directors to make recommendations for programs' operating, library and technology budgets and submits capital requests.

    Budget


    Co-Chairs (with the Vice President of Healthcare Relations/Dean of the College of Health Sciences) the Academic Affairs Budget Subcommittee and in collaboration with the committee prepares a budget that includes all academic departments and academic support services.


    Assists CASB division or program directors to develop and administer budgets that provides for the attainment of agreed upon goal and ensure compliance with budget guidelines and restraints.

    Monitors the cost effectiveness and efficiency of each academic program within the college.


    Works collaboratively with the Vice President of Institutional Advancement (VPIA) to identify sources and develop plans for attracting external financial resources for the college's scholarly and programmatic goals and provides leadership to faculty in grant preparation.

    Participates with other members of the President's Cabinet to develop, implement, and monitor the University's operating and capital budgets.

    Monitors the overall Academic Affairs and CASB operating budgets.

    Support of Shared Governance


    The VPAA supports the shared governance system by leading and participating in various committees, including ad hoc committees as needed.

    Academic Affairs Council (chairs this council)

    Academic Program Review Committee (chairs this committee)

    Academic Affairs Budget Subcommittee (co-chairs this committee)

    Council on Shared Governance

    Serves as an ex-officio member of all Academic Program Advisory Councils

    Is an ex-officio member of Faculty Forum and all Forum committees.

    This position carries no teaching load, but the individual may elect to teach courses as overloads subject to the approval of the President and of the relevant academic department.

    Adheres to university academic and employment policies identified in the Employee and Faculty Handbooks and Academic Catalogs


    Communicates both verbally and in writing with various university constituents including administrators, faculty, students, parents, and other individuals in the community as needed.

    Works cooperatively with other departments to identify and resolve problems, and coordinate and improve services.


    Encourages and monitors compliance of academic affairs faculty and staff with the University of Saint Francis policies, quality standards and expectations.

    Participates in various community and professional organizations as a representative of the university. Maintains contact with the area Academic Officers and membership in academic organizations.

    Attends university meetings as requested.

    Attends professional development in-services as directed to update knowledge and skills.

    Maintains basic Outlook calendar with meetings, out of office, etc.

    Serves as a role model, consistently demonstrating behaviors, attitudes, and values congruent with the university's mission and values.

    Performs other duties as assigned by the President.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    Practicing Roman Catholic in good standing with the Church and dedicated to the ministry of Catholic education. Shares the responsibility for articulating the Catholic, Franciscan values to the faculty, staff, and University constituents.

    Education

    A doctorate degree from an accredited institution in a field representative of the college is required.

    Experience

    At least seven years of experience in a university setting with progressive leadership responsibility in academic affairs is required.

    History of having achieved advanced academic rank (Associate Professor of Professor) in an academic field represented by the college.

    Knowledge and Skills

    Demonstrates honesty and loyalty to the university and is supportive of its mission and religious affiliation.

    Understanding of Catholic higher education.

    Must be highly motivated and a self-starter.

    Demonstrates well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively fulfill this expectation of the position.
