Research Associate - Senior Materials Engineer - Role and Responsibilities:

Materials Engineering Technology (MET) is looking for an experienced Materials Engineer to work with a collaborative, energetic team supporting Air Products' materials needs around the world.

This is a hybrid role based at Global HQ in Allentown, PA.

This role will directly support Air Products' carbon capture and green hydrogen plants, among others, through a combination of materials selection, failure analysis, and material performance research.

This senior technical role will support and mentor younger engineers in the US, Saudi Arabia, and China.

As part of the Chief Engineer's Office, MET performs risk assessment for the company and interacts with high level directors and managers to assess, communicate, and document risk, in addition to materials selection, failure analysis, and lifetime prediction work.


Scope of Responsibilities Include:

  • Materials selection for new plants and retrofits
  • Identifying gaps in materials performance and addressing through internal or external research
  • Plant support for materials compatibility, repair or replace decisions, and inspections
  • Opportunities to be involved in handson failure analysis and/or internal knowledge management
  • Working with external organizations such as AMPP (NACE), API, MTI, CGA, and ASTM to provide input on industry standards and keep up with industry developments and trends
  • Mentoring junior engineers in the US, Europe, Saudi Arabia, and China
  • 10% travel, including plant visits, conference travel, and/or supplier visits
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Qualifications

  • Experience identifying, designing and executing materials performance research projects
  • Expertise in cryogenic materials performance and testing
  • Expertise in ironbase and nickelbase alloys and aluminum, wrought and cast

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience with oxygen compatibility of materials
  • Experience with nonmetallics materials selection and failure analysis
  • Experience with gasification, ammonia production, CO2 capture and sequestration, and/or hydrogen production
  • Experience with machinery

Education and Licensing Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree, master's degree or Ph.
D. in Metallurgy, Materials Engineering, or related field

  • 20 years of workrelated experience, outside of school doing failure analysis and materials selection in the chemical process industries and/or energy industry.
