    Default job background
    Description

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution.

DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees.

DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system's 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.

OEHS is responsible for maintaining agency-wide environmental and occupational health and safety compliance.

The intern will collaborate with the EHS Performance Measurement and Strategic Planning (PMSP) as well as the EHS Program Development Sections within OEHS.

The PMSP Section is responsible for conducting agency-level programmatic EHS assessments, compiling and presenting EHS performance metrics, and spearheading strategic development and continuous improvement of the agency-wide EHS programs.

A key action item under the Agency's strategic plan is to strengthen performance metrics for leading and lagging indicators for executive decision-making.

As part of this effort, the Section is responsible for scheduling a redesigned framework to conduct assessments of DEP facilities based on priority listings.

This framework plays a substantial role in evaluating the Agency's current efforts and progress in strengthening critical EHS programs relevant to the ISO 45001 management system standards.

The PMSP Section also utilizes multiple internal database systems to manage performance data.

These systems include Action Item Tracking (AIT) system for managing audit findings, and Audit and Incident Information Management System (AIIMS) for evaluating risk and metrics data on incidents, near miss, and hazard identification across DEP opertions.

The EHS Program Development Section is responsible for developing EHS policies and guidelines to ensure operational compliance with all applicable environmental, health, and safety laws, rules, and regulations.

The selected candidate will assist this division in serving the EHS needs of the Agency.

The selected 2024 summer interns will work closely with various technical staff and have the opportunity to participate in EHS audits of industrial facility operations.

The interns will perform the following tasks:

    • Assisting in reviewing and supporting the planning and execution of priority EHS programs relevant to the ISO 45001 management system standard.
    • Providing general support and assistance for PMSP Section initiatives, such as policy development, planning EHS assessments, researching and incorporating new techniques into the existing EHS assessment protocol, and developing guidance/checklists.
    • Supporting performance metrics measurement, conducting quality reviews, generating reports, customizing AIIMS dashboards, creating performance metrics templates, and developing guidance documents.
    • Conducting technical research, collaborating with subject matter experts, compiling relevant information, review proposed and promulgated regulations, analyzing the current DEP EHS policies, and preparing recommendations for the EHS policy and guidelines updates.
    • Assist OEHS with special projects as needed
    • Assisting in the EHS policy training module development.
    • Assisting in routine Section activities, including regulatory research for OEHS and preparing report.
