    OVERVIEW:
    Under close direction of an Environmental Health Program Manager, receives on the job training in routine environmental health work.


    YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:
    (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all duties which may be found in positions of this class.)

    Conduct routine inspections for compliance with regulations

    Conduct general environmental surveys

    Investigate complaints relating to general environmental health programs

    Perform sampling, surveillance, and monitoring for specific environmental health program requirements

    Review and evaluate laboratory results, construction plans, specifications, and systems

    Participate in emergency response situations, and make recommendations concerning environmental health aspects

    Assist in the enforcement of local, state and federal environmental health regulations

    Accumulate evidence of violations of environmental health laws and help to initiates legal action

    Initiate necessary abatement procedures

    Listed duties are performed in, but not limited to, one or more of the following programs:

    Food Service Public Swimming Pools Solid Waste

    Drinking Water Air Pollution Housing

    Vector Control Water Quality Wastewater

    Complaints Public Accommodations Institutions

    Radiation Hazardous Waste Other Related Programs


    ABOUT YOU:

    Education:

    • A bachelor's degree from an environmental health program accredited by the National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council (EHAC);
    OR

    A bachelor's degree from an accredited program in a college or university with a major study in one of the following:

    Agronomy Microbiology

    Biology Physics

    Botany Physiology

    Chemistry Sanitary Engineering

    Environmental Health Science Zoology

    Geology

    OR

    A bachelor's degree from an accredited program in a college or university including:

    A college or university level algebra or math course

    30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours from at least three of the curriculums listed in requirement (2.) above.


    AND

    Licensure:
    Applicant must be qualified to become licensed as an environmental health scientist-in-training at time of hire.


    Experience:
    None required.


    Knowledge:
    Fundamental knowledge of public relations, and report writing.

    Abilities:

    Ability to follow written and verbal instructions; ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, other agencies, and the public.


    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
    (A) This is a training position, and individuals are required to practice under the general supervision of a licensed environmental health scientist for a minimum of six months

    (B) Probation is for six months and will begin when the individual becomes licensed to practice as a licensed environmental health scientist

    (C) Licensure as an environmental health scientist must be completed within one year of the date of hire or employment will be terminated.

    (D) Must possess a valid Utah State driver license and be capable of independently operating a motor vehicle

    (E) Must be physically capable of moving about on construction work sites and under adverse field conditions.

    Eighty percent of the work is performed in a field setting.

    Will inspect various public facilities, check under, above, behind equipment, storage areas, basement, garbage areas, restrooms, etc., looking for dust, dirt, grease, insects, proper construction, lighting, and adequate sanitation and safety measures.

    Ability to climb water tanks, evaluate soil test holes, bending on hands and knees, collection of swimming pool and stream samples, hike to springs and wells, perform inspections and soil sampling on underground storage tanks.

    Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate testing instruments, computers and various pieces of equipment.

    Twenty percent of the work is office work:
    writing reports, talking on the telephone, and meeting the public and other officials.


    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.

    The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and smell.

    The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

    Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

    The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
