General Summary of Position
***
Provides advanced level technical and operational support for the Advanced Heart Failure Program within MedStar through the management of VAD Equipment. This position interfaces with VAD Coordinators, Perfusionists, Nursing and patients in the use, monitoring, and troubleshooting of the VAD equipment Demonstrates ability to learn and to assume progressive responsibility to work independently. Performs quality assurance testing, preventive maintenance, calibrations, repairs, and electrical safety inspections on VAD equipment. Responsibilities include oversight of distribution, ordering, and reconciliation of all VAD equipment with internal and external customers and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Responsible as an individual contributor but may sometimes direct one or two other employees.

Primary Duties:

Participates in the creation and coordination of processes for equipment distribution, billing, and tracking for all MedStar entities where equipment is distributed to VAD patients.

Contacts patients regarding equipment tracking. Responds to outpatient requests for equipment troubleshooting over the phone or in clinic and makes a safe equipment plan for replacement as indicated. Coaches' patients to perform routine equipment maintenance at home such as battery calibration.

Troubleshoots the integrity of equipment and monitors for wear and tear that would affect the functionality of the VAD equipment. Problem solves alarm conditions to differentiate between expected alarms and alarms indicative of malfunction requiring equipment replacement. Works with VAD clinicians to replace any malfunctioning equipment.

Develops, documents, and performs preventive maintenance, quality assurance, and performance testing on VAD Equipment. Collaborates with BioMed to ensure annual maintenance is performed on power modules.

Collaborates with clinical team to provide patient education during index equipment distribution on VAD components, names of equipment, equipment handling, cleaning, and safe storage.

Works with equipment manufacturers and vendors in the acquisition, installation, and maintenance of VAD equipment. Evaluates equipment service needs, makes recommendations, and assists in developing procedures related to the use of new equipment. Assumes additional duties and responsibilities in maintaining existing and newly purchased VAD medical equipment and devices.

Manages a comprehensive equipment tracking database to monitor inventory, reconcile serial numbers for patient owned equipment according to FDA and The Joint Commission (TJC) standards, and proactively identifies the need for equipment replacement.

Works in concert with VAD clinicians to respond to FDA recalls as soon as the hospital is notified. Maintains all documentation related to recalls. Uploads recall documents in Emergency Care Research Institute (ECRI) and resolves recall actions in ECRI when response is complete.

Qualifications:

Associate degree in relevant field preferred:

3-4 years of progressively more responsible job-related experience required

The manufacturer clinical representatives/ vendors will train and certify that the VAD Equipment Specialist is able to identify and state the name for each component, state the function of each component, describe the billing process for each piece of VAD equipment, and demonstrate documentation of equipment distribution in the VAD equipment database.
