Position Summary


The Community Housing Specialist supports Best Single Source Plus (BSS Plus) a collaboration of nonprofit partners that provide housing stability services for individuals and families experiencing homelessness or housing instability.

The goal is to increase access to private market owned rental property for individuals and families moving from homelessness to permanent housing throughout Travis County and the City of Austin.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities (inclusive but not exhaustive):

  • Establish relationships with property managers to assist in locating appropriate housing for households who may have multiple barriers to obtaining permanent housing.
  • Maintain property manager relationships and develop/maintain housing inventory on properties and property manager contacts.
  • Develop outreach materials and agreements with property managers that will provide rental units to help homeless households access and maintain permanent housing.
  • Develop/coordinate training events for property managers.
  • Communicate property vacancies and other relevant information to Partner Agencies
  • Participates in ECHO Housing Outreach Task group and other community housing groups.
  • Serves as a housing resource and leader in housing best practices for partner agency staff, lending additional support as needed. Develops and implements property manager appreciation plan, including ongoing appreciation and special event(s).
  • Provide housing consultations and housing search support for clients with multiple barriers to housing.
  • Provide Information on tenant's rights and mediate with property management when requested.
  • Submits requests and analyzes criminal and rental history reports through AmRent and compiles a summary of the background check information to agency case managers as needed.
  • Trains BSS+ Partner staff on BSS+ rental assistance and negotiating with Property Management, AmRent Process, Tenant's rights, Habitability Inspections, and other related topics.
  • Inspects new and existing properties for safety and habitability standards as needed. Assists with coordination and implementation of disaster response plan for the collaboration.
  • Maintains documentation in accordance with grant and program guidelines.
  • Attends agency and program meetings as assigned.
  • Transport clients to see properties and/or meeting with property managers as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:


Education

  • Required: High school diploma or GED.
  • Preferred: Associate's or Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major in Business Administration or Social Science

Experience

  • Requires minimum of 1 to 3 years of applicable professional experience in property management, apartment/housing location, or real estate.
  • Knowledge and skills in identifying affordable permanent housing units.
  • Knowledge of housing market trends within Travis and surrounding counties.
  • Proficiency in organizational and record keeping skills.
  • Experience with nonprofits preferred.

Computer Skills

  • Experience with internet, MS Office, and databases required. HMIS (Homeless Management Information System) experience preferred.

Language Skills
Bilingual proficiency (English and Spanish or other language) preferred.


Other
Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 30 days of employment.


Salary/Benefits:


  • Base Salary Range: $40,114$49,702.
