    3 days in the office and 2 days virtually, some evening/weekend work is required.

    Position summary:


    The Joseph Meyerhoff Center for Career Development empowers and educates MICA students and alumni to create purposeful sustainable careers as entrepreneurs, artists, designers, and educators through a collaborative, innovative, experiential, and research-based approach.


    As part of the Maryland Institute College of Art's (MICA) Career Development team, the Assistant Director for Career Development advises undergraduate, graduate, and open studies students, as well as alumni.

    Creates and presents virtual and in-person programs and in-class presentations on various professional development topics. Builds resources and fosters relationships to support the career development outcomes of our students and graduates.

    General purpose:
    Providing coaching, presenting programs, and developing resources

    for MICA students and alumni by collaborating with a variety of constituents - staff, faculty, parents, alumni, employers, and organizations.


    Major role functions:
    With the Career Development team, provide services to students and alumni that enable them to successfully pursue internships, work opportunities, participate in competitions, awards, and residencies or prepare for further education

    Provide individual and group advising, programming, resources, access to connections, and instruction on developing networking strategies

    With the Career Development team and other MICA staff and faculty, build and maintain external relationships with employers and organizations to facilitate opportunities for students

    responsibilities:

    Advising:
    Provide individual and group professional development advising to undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni. Meet either virtually or in-person for 1-on-1 appointments.

    Conduct group and individual career advising appointments virtually through Zoom, on-site at the Joseph Meyerhoff Center for Career Development, in student studios, classroom spaces and during departmental events

    Advise students in the graduate school application process as well as assist those seeking other forms of continuing education

    Provide feedback and written edits of student resumes, cover letters, portfolios, websites, social media, residency and grant applications, and other professional documents


    Teaching:
    Serve as faculty for students completing the Internship Course through Canvas

    Grade midterm and final assignments and facilitate final presentation meetings at the end of each semester

    Design, coordinate and/or teach professional development workshops for campus wide programing, for student leaders, in classes, and for recruiting events

    Assist in creating and delivering bi-weekly group training for the Peer Career Advisors (PCAs)


    Collaboration:
    Maintain a symbiotic partnership with the employer relations staff member to nurture existing relationships and cultivate new partnerships with employers, organizations, and outside partners

    Provide support for Career Development events.

    Build relationships with faculty, staff across campus, and externally with alumni and outside partners to ensure coordination of career-related initiatives and co-curricular career programs

    Develop meaningful relationships with faculty to foster a campus dialogue around career readiness and develop robust industry networks

    As part of the larger Career Development team, assist with many administrative tasks including those associated with coordinating speaker panels, workshops, internship grant review panels, ongoing assessment tasks and promotional processes as well as the upkeep of the file management system


    Supervise Student Workers:
    Hire, train, and assist in supervising the PCAs on events or programs they plan and advise on their projects and programs

    Coach PCAs on various professional development topics and how to share the Career Development office resources with their peers

    Participate in Student Affairs iLead meetings and assist in providing resources and workshops for all student leaders


    Create Educational Resources:
    Craft and/or promote career resources including handouts, videos, job lists, and social media content

    With the rest of the Career development team, periodically update existing resources


    Collect and Promote Student Opportunities:
    Seek out and promote opportunities through MICAnetwork, newsletters and other channels based on an understanding of student needs/interests and emerging fields

    Contribute to social media initiatives. Assist with promoting opportunities through providing content for Instagram, LinkedIn, and internally on the MICAapp


    Other Participation:
    With the Career Development team and faculty, assist in gathering stories and data on life after MICA to assess graduates' success in achieving desired career goals

    Actively participate in division monthly meetings, weekly staff meetings, assigned committee work and ongoing assessment and strategic planning assignments


    Required essential skills and experience:
    Bachelor's degree in related field

    An understanding of the professional development needs of designers, artists, and creatives and their potential post-graduation options

    Demonstrated skills in human relations, written and oral communications, organization, planning, creativity, and collaboration

    Possess the ability to identify and connect students to people and opportunities

    The ability to use technology (Google Workspace applications, Slack, Microsoft, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, and various internal platforms) to achieve department goals

    Valued but not required skills and experience:
    Master's degree in related field and relevant professional experience

    Experience working with college students and adult learners

    Knowledge of career development theory and application

    Commitment to professional development and involvement in professional associations

    Understanding of social media platforms and experience with creating impactful content using Instagram, LinkedIn, and internally the MICAapp


    Reporting to this position:
    No direct professional reports. Co-hires, trains and supervises PCAs.

    Work environment:
    While performing the duties of the job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually (minimal, moderate, or high).


    Required training:
    Handbook orientation, Anti-Harassment, Hazard Communication, Emergency Plans & Fire Prevention, Personal Protection Equipment.
