    About Us

    For over 140 years, DVA has been committed to caring for veterans and their dependents. Our department believes in "serving those who have served," which is reflected in our various services such as the Office of Advocacy and Assistance, Residential Facility, Healthcare Center, and Cemetery and Burial Services. The DVA continues to support Connecticut Veterans through Residential and Healthcare programs at our Rocky Hill campus.

    • Residential Facility: Provides temporary, supportive living with programs aimed at reintegrating Connecticut Veterans into independent community living.
    • Sgt. John L. Levitow Healthcare Center: A state-of-the-art medical facility offering long-term care for veterans with chronic conditions requiring 24-hour support.

    Purpose of Job Class (Nature of Work)

    In a state hospital setting, this role involves providing bedside care to the physically or chronically ill in situations where the services of a registered or licensed practical nurse are not necessary.

    Examples of Duties

    • Provide assistance to doctors and nurses in the general care and well-being of patients;
    • Handle patient positioning, transfers, and movements;
    • Take and record vital signs like temperatures, pulses, and respirations;
    • Observe patients for any unusual symptoms or behaviors and report accordingly;
    • Ensure correct application of restraints;
    • Conduct basic medical tests like urine sample analysis;
    • Collect specimens;
    • Maintain cleanliness of beds, bedpans, and related equipment;
    • Ensure a safe patient environment;
    • Transport patients and related items;
    • Prepare reports, correspondence, and necessary documentation;
    • Perform additional duties as required.

    Knowledge, Skill, and Ability

    • Strong interpersonal skills;
    • Ability to work with basic nursing principles, infection control practices, and care for the physically and chronically ill;
    • Ability to learn and apply safety and fire procedures.

    Minimum Qualifications - General Experience

    Certification as a Nurse's Aide.

    Minimum Qualifications - Substitutions Allowed

    One (1) year of experience in patient care in a hospital or nursing home setting.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Previous experience in a Skilled Nursing Facility (nursing home);
    • Experience in caring for patients with dementia;
    • Experience working with clients/patients with behavioral health issues and/or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
