Description

Care for the Homeless (CFH)** is a growing not-for-profit health care and social service agency that serves the homeless population of New York City. CFH provides medical and behavioral health services at thirty shelters, soup kitchens, and drop-in centers throughout NYC.


Summary:

The Recreation Coordinator will create opportunities for a wide range of stimulating activities for shelter residents.

Activities planned should include, but not limited to:
music, arts, crafts, drama and exercise programs. Many residents will also benefit from taking classes such as continuing education seminars.

If feasible, this should also include sourcing activities from community partnerships to find volunteers with the appropriate skills and knowledge to offer these experiences.

The Recreation Coordinator will also maintain a monthly calendar of activities for residents. This person will keep an attendance record for each activity and produce a monthly report of program outcomes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The
Recreation Coordinator (reporting to the Shelter Director) has responsibility for the following:

  • Plans outings for residents (this could include trips to public events, museums, special events by invitation like dinners, concerts, shows, houses of worship and other special events, etc.
  • The Coordinator should encourage residents to attend internal as well as external agency sponsored events. (This includes advertising and recruiting for the events).
  • Plans robust activities calendar for the residents (this includes recreational as well as educational engagements (ex. computer, aerobics, gym classes and other personcentered activities).
  • Other related duties as assigned by Shelter Director.

Educational Requirements:


  • Minimum of a High School diploma, college degree preferred.

Experience:


  • Preferred experience Minimum of 3 years working in a similar job or with similar population.
  • Proven ability to facilitate both external and internal group presentations
  • Experience working with the mentally ill and/or homeless population (preferred).
  • Flexible and comfortable in nontraditional settings.
