California Medical Innovations Institute is a non-profit research organization in San Diego that brings together physical and life science researchers, clinicians, engineers, and computational scientists. We are responsible for ensuring the health and well-being of laboratory animals through the performance of veterinary technical services while ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations and corporate policies and procedures.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for professional technical support to enable the scientists and their research while ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations and corporate policies and procedures.
Provide animal husbandry services according to established procedures including monitoring and evaluating animal health, reporting abnormal conditions, monitoring and providing simple and complex clinical treatments as directed by a veterinarian or the investigator.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Monitor large animals under anesthesia for doctors and researchers during surgeries for sterile and nonsterile procedures.
- Assist researchers in the performance of minor or complex surgical procedures under anesthesia.
- Assist doctors and researchers with all surgical suite equipment including,
- Recover animals according to established guidelines post anesthetic procedures.
- Organize operation rooms for all incoming studies.
- Sterilize tools and equipment for all incoming studies.
- Always maintain the cleanliness of surgical spaces.
- Keep all drug logs up to date in accordance with local and federal laws
- Administer medication/compounds via multiple routes IV, SQ, IM, IP
- Rotate with additional care staff on multiple surgeries/procedures/studies.
- Provide the highest quality of veterinary medical care for research Rodents, Guinea Pigs, Rabbits, Swine, Ovine and Canine
- Must be able to work with animals for up to 8 hours a day; lift animals up to 50 pounds; stand, walk, stoop, reach with arms, push and pull equipment; and perform repetitive motions with arms, wrists and hands.
- Provide animal services according to established procedures including monitoring and evaluating animal health, reporting abnormal conditions, providing clinical treatments as directed by a veterinarian, LAPM or designer.
- Ability to read and understand active protocols and ensure safety and compliance.
- Assist animal husbandry technicians as needed to maintain a clean environment for housed animals.
- Clean and scrub animal cages/rooms. Feeding and checking water drinking valves daily.
- Receive, inspect, and house new animals as needed. Maintain daily room logs.
COMPLIANCE AND RECORDKEEPING
- Ensures compliance with IACUC, GLP, USDA, OLAW, AAALAC-I, AWA, OSHA, and other applicable regulations or guidelines and with company policies and practices on animal care and research security and may include interacting with inspectors and representatives of enforcement agencies
- Ensures the accurate and timely keeping of records and documentation on activities
- Applies emergency medical knowledge as necessary with a priority of maximizing data gain and minimizing animal loss
- Provides guidance and direction for less experienced staff
QUALITY MANAGEMENT
- Contribute to the success of the organization by participating in quality improvement activities
- Maintain professional working relationships with all levels of staff and all departments
- Be a team player and cooperate in accomplishing department goals and objectives
SAFETY
- Maintain current knowledge of policies and procedures as they relate to safe work practices
- Follow all safety procedures and report unsafe conditions
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- AA or equivalent experience in Animal Science, Biology, Veterinary Technology or related field
- Minimum of 1year experience in veterinary medicine with a strong emphasis on surgical assisting and monitoring
- Previous vivarium experience preferred, AALAS certification a plus
ANNUAL REQUIREMENTS
- Job entails animal allergen exposure and may require blood titers and/or immunization, depending on exposure to various species
- May included but is not limited to Tetanus, Rabies and/or Hepatitis B & A
