    Default job background
    Description

    Joby Overview:
Located in Northern California, the team at Joby Aviation is driven by our goal of creating an affordable, all-electric air transportation system. Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. Weve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. Were looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onwards toward certifying the Joby aircraft with the Federal Aviation Administration, scaling our manufacturing, and preparing to launch commercial service in 2025.

    Overview:

The Electrical Engineer position will be instrumental to Jobys Infrastructure Engineering Team as they design, build and electrify new skyports and existing heliports to operate and charge Jobys pioneering electric Vertical Take-off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The selected individual will be a key member of the Infrastructure Team developing first of its kind electrified vertical take-off and landing sites, contributing to the success of each project through technical due diligence site assessments, development of detailed electrical designs, and execution to energize each site for aircraft charging and terminal building customer processing operations. The role will work in close collaboration with Jobys battery ground support equipment team developing the ultra-fast Global Electric Aviation Charging System (GEACS) to continually drive innovation towards optimized performance and best in class customer experience for each site. Integration of renewable energy sources, battery energy storage systems, and other novel electrical infrastructure technologies are encouraged to be evaluated using a first principles approach to challenge conventional standards and find the optimal solution for each site. The position will play an active role in electrical code development as it relates to site safety for novel DC charging equipment with integrated aircraft thermal management, innovative battery energy storage systems, and other electrical infrastructure to support a first in class aircraft charging system development and deployment.

    Responsibilities:
    • Perform initial technical due diligence evaluations for potential sites to assess existing power availability and potential upgrade options

    • Generate design concepts for electrical site upgrade options to evaluate cost with performance to help down select the optimal solution for each site

    • Develop electrical design drawings for site upgrades, charging infrastructure and customer processing terminal buildings, from design development through construction documents

    • Work with property owners, local authorities, Joby Operations, Joby Business Development and Joby Facilities teams to find optimal solutions with respect to cost, schedule and performance

    • Develop innovative approaches to streamline site installation and activation of aircraft charging equipment at operating sites by leveraging pre-fabricated shop certified electrical assemblies or other novel solutions

    • Research, apply and influence domestic and international electrical codes and standards to ensure the highest levels of safety, reliability and performance for Joby operations

    • Support code improvement efforts with standards development organizations and code development bodies

    • Support information sharing and safety promotion activities with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) on topics related to electrical engineering, aircraft charging, and electric aircraft in general

    • Shepherd our electrical ground support equipment through regulatory approval in the U.S. and abroad; examples include field listing or factory listing of power handling equipment

    • Drive industry thought leadership on key electrical engineering issues related to infrastructure, aircraft charging, and electric aircraft in general
    • Be willing and able to support other teams and/or individuals with general electrical infrastructure related tasks
    Required:
    • B.S. in electrical engineering or relevant discipline

    • Electrical P.E. license required for either California and/or New York
    • At least 5 years of relevant electrical design/engineering experience
    • Expert knowledge in electrical infrastructure design, component selection, code compliance and energy management systems
    • Working knowledge of guidance and code from the National Electrical Code (NEC), and/or other guidance (including state and local guidance) relating to infrastructure and Electric Vehicles (EVs)
    • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and/or Microstation
    • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with the ability to pivot as required to meet future company needs
    • Ability to thrive in solving novel problems for which there are few existing precedents, standards, or methodologies
    • Ability to engage external stakeholders, such as regulatory bodies and various Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) to obtain necessary approvals for the project
    • Experience working with architects and engineers to produce fully coordinated designs
    • Experience working across different disciplines and departments internally, with the ability to drive towards well-informed, balanced, and optimized solutions
    • Excellent written, verbal, and listening (English) communication skills
    • Strong collaborative drive and interpersonal skills
    • Strong initiative, proactive work ethics, and analytical problem-solving skills
    • Travel would be required (up to 25%) depending on project-specific requirements
    Desired:
    • Ability to prepare cost estimates as they relate to electrical equipment and infrastructure
    • Experience with solar, energy storage and Electric Vehicle (EV) charging systems
    • Experience with power quality monitoring and power quality mitigation strategies
    • Ability to prepare timelines as they relate to electrical equipment and infrastructure

The target base pay for this position is $102,700 - $166,500 per year. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Joby also offers a comprehensive benefits package, including paid time off, healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan with a company match, an employee stock purchase plan (ESPP), short-term and long-term disability coverage, life insurance, and more.
