School Nurse

Description:

Under the direct supervision of the Head of School, the school nurse position delivers a comprehensive school health services program for all students and collaborates with school staff to ensure that health services are coordinated and integrated with the school programming.

The School Nurse provides health consultation to the administrative team and health services to employees for acute illness and injuries and performs other duties as assigned including supervision of CMTs as applicable.

The School Nurse serves as a liaison between school personnel, family, community and healthcare providers and as a resource for parents, teachers, staff and administration.

  • Administers medications, health care treatments, and first aid to students/staff as necessary and in accordance with school policies and Maryland state law.
  • Assists students with any health care need including selfcare needs such as blood glucose monitoring.
  • Identifies health barriers to student achievement and works with school staff and families to remediate those barriers.
  • Provides and coordinates health care interventions, including emergency responses.
  • Develops a plan of care for students with chronic health conditions.
  • Assesses the health needs of the school community.
  • Coordinates health matters between the health care provider, family, and the school.
  • Conducts and coordinates health screening programs.
  • Maintains school health records, including ensuring compliance with Maryland state health mandates for school attendance.
  • Monitors the spread of communicable diseases. Develops and implements strategies to control the spread of communicable diseases.
  • Promotes a safe and orderly school environment.
  • Provides health counseling and health education.
  • Develops emergency care plans and individual health plans for students on a case by case basis;
  • Prepares and maintains student clinic records and prepares required reports
  • Updates and maintains health physicals and immunization records
  • Maintains student's confidential files and records (e.g. health plans, physician orders, accident reports, etc.) for the purpose of providing information required by professional standards
  • Maintains clinic equipment and assesses the need for consumable supplies regularly
  • Collaborates with other Independent School nurses to ensure best practices for Glenwood Academy.

Hours: 10 Month Full-Time Position during school year


Minimum Qualifications:


  • Knowledge of the nursing process.
  • Knowledge of the pathophysiology and nursing management of common acute and chronic health conditions of the school population.
  • Knowledge of the tools, instruments, and equipment used in nursing.
  • Knowledge of current health issues and trends.
  • Skill in the provision of a variety of nursing care services.
  • Skill in the monitoring and assessment of patients' health care needs and services.
  • Skill in the preparation and maintenance of records.
  • Skill in verbal and written communication, including interdisciplinary and multicultural communication.
  • Skill in the use of computers and word processing, database, patient care documentation, and spreadsheet software packages.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with students, parents, and Glenwood Academy supervisors and administrators.
  • Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information and records.

Education:


Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in nursing and two years of professional nursing experience.


Licenses and Certification:

Possession of a valid license to practice registered nursing (RN), issued by the Maryland Board of Nursing is required. Possession of current CPR certification.


Physical and Environmental Conditions:

The work of this class is generally performed in a school environment.

The work of this classification may include the performance of physical activities such as walking, standing, and lifting, the operation of medical equipment, and instruments.
