    Description

    The Division of Intramural Research, National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), located in Bethesda, MD, is seeking a Staff Clinician (High Scarcity – HS), Otolaryngologist-Head and Neck Surgeon, to serve as the Chief of Otolaryngology-Head Neck Surgery Service (COHNSS) that provides clinical care, research, and training.

    The NIDCD clinical research mission areas include normal function and disorders of the head and neck affecting hearing, balance, paranasal sinuses, smell, taste, voice, speech, and language.


    The COHNSS:
    (1) builds and fosters a vibrant clinical consult service that leverages collaborations with other NIH Institutes, the Clinical Center, and academic and governmental institutions; (2) builds clinic capacity for patients seen on NIDCD and other NIH clinical research protocols; (3) provides superior quality and safe patient care, supported by standard operating procedures implemented by all clinic personnel; (4) coordinates services and care provided in clinic by physicians, mid-level providers, nurses, and medical and research personnel; and (5) trains clinical fellows, residents, and students.


    The COHNSS will coordinate staff scheduling for the weekday otolaryngology consult and research clinics and ensure 24/7 clinical coverage for the NIDCD clinical program.

    The COHNSS provides day-to-day oversight of personnel and their clinic activities supporting the NIDCD Clinical Research Program and supervises staff physicians, staff scientists, nurse practitioners, contractors, other Licensed Independent Practitioners, and the NIDCD Patient Coordinator in support of the care of patients on NIDCD and NIH clinical protocols.

    The COHNSS has the responsibility to (1) provide and coordinate high-quality patient care by otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, audiology, voice and speech pathology, nursing, and other specialties as applicable; (2) ensure the safety of research participants and patients; and (3) coordinate and provide clinical research training and supervision for fellows, residents and medical students.

    Preference will be given to candidates whose approaches complement those of our existing programs in clinical and translational research, including our newly established Smell and Taste Center.

    Qualifications:

    • Candidates must possess an M.D. or D.O., and board-eligibility or board certification in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery is highly preferred.
    • A record of scholarly clinical publications and evidence of national recognition is highly desired.
    • A record of teaching and/or leading clinical education or training programs is also highly desired.
    Salary is commensurate with training and relevant research experience.
