The Chapin School, an independent K-12 day school for girls located in New York City, seeks a student-centered, collaborative, and innovative educator to serve as Upper School French Teacher and Upper School Advisor.

Job Overview:

The Upper School French Teacher, as a member of the World Languages Department, will teach four sections of French and serve as an Upper School advisor.


The World Languages Department is a K-12 group of language educators and global citizens who are passionate about preparing students to thrive in a multilingual and multicultural world.

At Chapin, our students develop a high level of proficiency in at least one language other than English.

At the same time, they explore and celebrate the authentic voices of their language/s of study and gain a deeper understanding of cultural identity through art, history, literature, and other cultural products of the speakers and thinkers of those languages.

The World Languages Department believes that all students can be polyglots and that the ability to communicate in languages other than one's own is imperative if we are to become brave, compassionate, and respectful citizens and leaders in a diverse world.

Chapin's next Upper School French Teacher and Advisor will be:
A French teacher and second-language acquisition educator with a demonstrated commitment to innovation and interdisciplinary curriculum development who

  • Builds curriculum that takes a global perspective and centers voices from around the Francophone world.
  • Has the pedagogical skills and content knowledge to teach the entirety of the Upper School French course progression, from 8th grade French I through the advanced 12thgrade literature course.
  • Embraces the wide range of possibilities that technology brings to the language classroom, helping our students connect with peers and classrooms across the globe.
A student-centered educator who values each student's voice, experience, and history, and who

  • Creates a safe and joyful learning environment for all students by welcoming individual voices and experiences.
  • Employs culturally responsive teaching practices in order to reach all students and help them feel valued, known, understood, and loved.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Native or near native proficiency in French
  • Proficient in oral and written English
  • Minimum 2 years experience working with students

Preferred:

  • Master's degree or equivalent
  • Additional languages a plus
  • High School teaching experience
The salary for this position will be commensurate with experience, the range is $68,000-$125,000
