- Oversees incorporation and implementation of University, local, State and Federal guidelines; stays current on trends in the industry.
- Develops EHS policies addressing employee exposure prevention and assessment medical surveillance, exposure assessment, indoor air quality, safe handling of hazardous chemicals, animal care safety (IACUC), hearing conservation program, respiratory protection.
- Conducts/participates in process hazard reviews.
- Provide recommendations for efficient and effective solutions utilizing engineering controls and safe work practices.
- Assesses Occupational Health section to determine if equipped with sufficient resources, equipment, personnel, and information resources to provide value and technical health and safety assistance to high level research environment.
- Provide oversight to Occupational Health programs.
- Determine and adapt procedures and/or practices based on a broad variety of regulations impacting assessment and corrective action (i.e. respiratory protection)
- IACUC animal care safety, chemical exposure assessment, medical surveillance and other).
- Participate in campus emergency response; may provide technical expertise and/or assist other responding agencies.
- Analyzes and interprets analytical and workplace inspections data; provide direction for report preparation for areas of responsibility (internal and external to the University).
- Conducts EHS assessments to determine impact and program effectiveness. Decisions may have significant consequence.
- Lead a team to achieve synergistic results in the areas of indoor air quality, medical surveillance, field exposure prevention and assessment and others.
- Actively engages with other professionals in the field to ensure programs align with industry best practices.
- Utilizes significant technical expertise to serve as Subject Matter Expert in developing and implementing new or original programs; evaluate effectiveness in the training programs.
- Determine composition of corrective actions of existing programs; make decisions impacting the campus policy or procedure.
- Ensure self-audits are performed, review for completeness.
- Makes final decisions in certification; recommend changes to EH&S license or permits
- Collaborates closely with campus partners to identify and implement process changes aimed at ensuring regulatory compliance through conducting in process hazard reviews.
- Analyzes and identifies specialized EHS standards and educational resources requiring significant analysis to determine training materials and communication methods (example respiratory protection and hearing conservation)
- Communicate major investigation action, internal and external to the organization.

- Bachelor's degree and two years of related experience; or Master's Degree in a Physical Science, Biological Science, Environmental Science/Engineering, Occupational Safety, Industrial Technology or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Has in depth experience of exposure prevention and assessment techniques, as well as, indoor air quality and apply this knowledge in a research environment to a variety of safety and health programs. - Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Able to review technical information and processes, identify root cause problems or areas needing improvement and formulate effective and efficient solutions for the research community.
- Able to analyze multiple programs, identify areas needing improvements, and prioritize needs for effective short and long term strategic planning for his/her department.
- Master's degree in biological sciences, industrial hygiene, microbiology or related applied science plus 5 years of progressive experience in industrial hygiene or biological safety
- Professional certification – Certified Industrial Hygienist desirable, desired but not required.
- Experience in research environments and with animal research is preferred.
- Familiarization with CDC and NIH guidelines is a plus.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Valid NC Driver's License within 60 days of hire.

About the Department:The Occupational Health Section, as part of the Occupational Safety and Health group at EHS, provides servicesto the extended campus community. This group handles programs, including but not limited to, medicalsurveillance, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, indoor air quality, review assessment, and control ofchemical and physical hazards which may affect the health of campus occupants.
Essential Job Duties:The Industrial Hygiene Consultant will provide program leadership for the Occupational Health section of Environmental Health & Safety (EHS). The successful candidate will help develop and implement comprehensive industrial hygiene programs, policies, and procedures to ensure NCSU complies with applicable regulations and industry best practices. Provide comprehensive worksite evaluation to identify and control potential health hazards.
The IH Consultant will mentor a junior industrial hygiene staff and provide leadership in various IH activities such as air sampling, noise monitoring, exposure assessment, hazardous building materials such as asbestos, lead, lead paint, silica, formaldehyde, etc.
Collaborate with campus stakeholders such as Facilities Services, Campus Health, Housing, Campus Enterprises, and other groups to review and resolve industrial hygiene issues. Leads or participates in incident investigations related to occupational illnesses or exposures and recommends corrective actions to prevent future occurrences. Be able to recommend appropriate engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment (PPE) to reduce or eliminate workplace hazards.
Provide training and educational programs to employees on various industrial hygiene issues including hazard communication, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, and ergonomics. Stay current with applicable regulations – OSHA, NIOSH, EPA, AIHA/ACGIH, etc., industry trends, and advancements in industrial hygiene practices, and recommend appropriate changes to existing programs and practices.
Develop short- and long-term goals for effective program management, including budget proposal to meet program needs.
Act as a resource and provide expert guidance to EHS leadership – managers and Directors- on matters related to industrial hygiene and occupational health. Act as interface for third party Industrial Hygiene service providers. Collaborate with regulatory agencies and participate in inspections and audits to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
