Job Summary


The medical physicist is responsible for all physics and radiation safety duties including treatment planning, dosimetry data management, special physics reports and consultations, equipment calibration of linear accelerators and simulation machine, and quality assurance of patient treatment equipment.


Duties and responsibilities

  • Assure the safe and effective delivery of radiation to achieve a therapeutic result as prescribed in patient care.
  • Assure the prescribed doses of radiation to specific body parts, using radiation therapy equipment according to established practices and standards.
  • Operating knowledge of planning system Varian Eclipse and Varian Accelerators.
  • Applies working knowledge of all tissue tolerances and proper use of linac in beam setup.
  • Check radiation therapy equipment to ensure proper operation using established procedures.
  • Perform acceptance testing, evaluation and commissioning of equipment used for externalbeam therapy, brachytherapy, simulation, treatmentplanning, and radiation detection, acceptance testing and evaluation of their associated computer systems, algorithms, data, and output.
  • Measure and characterize medical radiation from radiation therapy treatment, brachytherapy, and simulation equipment prior to clinical utilization.
  • Perform necessary secondary checks for all treatment plans.
  • Works collaboratively with Management, Leadership, RTTs and Dosimetrists for safe and accurate patient treatments
  • Maintains records and reports to ensure patient safety.
  • Maintains an atmosphere of caring, concern and support for patients, visitors, medical staff, and coworkers on a consistent basis.
  • Special projects and assignments as directed by upper management.

Qualifications and Educational Requirement

  • Board Certification or Board eligibility by the American Board of Radiology, or equivalent, is required.
  • Master's Degree required PhD preferred in Medical Physics or related field required.
  • Authorized medical physicist (AMP), or complete form NRC 313A AMP for HDR
  • A Valid Driver's license is required.
  • Experience utilizing Truebeam, ClinaciX, ARIA R&V, Eclipse, Elekta Afterloader, Oncentra Planning preferred.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills

Moderate noise levels from medical setting and equipment

Controlling machines and processes - Using either control mechanisms or direct physical activity to operate machines or processes.

Inspecting equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.

Ability to see details at close range.

Ability to listen and understand information through spoken words and sentences.

Ability to read and understand information in writing.

Ability to communicate information in speaking so others will understand.

Standing for long periods of time

Minimum lifting requirements of 40 pounds in order to transfer equipment, help patients with positioning, and pack/unpack supplies.

Frequent bending, twisting, and position changes in order to assist patients.
