Purpose/Basic Function:


To facilitate the movement of scrap metal and associated materials for the purpose of processing or delivery to a consuming facility.

This will also include the transporting of scrap processing equipment and their components.

All related job functions will be completed in the safest, most efficient, and cost-effective procedure possible, while keeping the needs of our suppliers as one of the top priorities.


Principle Responsibilities:

The Logistics Manager (L/M) will schedule the movement of scrap materials and or scrap equipment.

This will be accomplished by utilizing the services of owner operators, dedicated haulers, & Excel's company owned equipment and their drivers.


The L/M will decide which piece of equipment or trucker that will be used to make the necessary movement of materials or equipment.

This decision will be based on safety, availability, and the most cost effective approach for Excel. The L/M will also be responsible for all record keeping & DOT compliance.


Specific Duties:


  • Work with Dispatch to create a daily dispatch based on incoming / outgoing shipments of all scrap and scrap materials available for pickup & delivery.
  • Establish a daily roll off schedule to meet the needs of the suppliers and the industrial accounts that we service.
  • Coordinate with Excel buyers, & customer / yard representatives, the commodities and tonnage's that are required for the day or week. Then coordinate the movement of that scrap for each particular site.
  • Daily contact with Excel buyers, & suppliers, to determine what commodities they have ready to ship. This information enables the scheduling of that commodity into the appropriate location.
  • Maintain & adjust the daily schedule set forth, to accommodate for necessary changes or unforeseen problems that may arise.
  • Schedule with operations and maintain trucking to the various landfills that Excel delivers ASR.
  • Schedule & monitor routine maintenance, damaged trucks / trailers, & breakdowns.
  • Monitor daily performance of each driver against dispatched loads.
  • Monitor daily loads for efficiency, maximization & DOT compliance.
  • Review and approve the company driver's hours weekly.
  • Monitor internal freight costing for Excel owned trucks.
  • Hiring / Onboarding of new owner operators based on needs required to move desired materials.
  • Management / Oversight of contractual dedicated haulers.
  • Reconcile and approve on a weekly basis, invoices from dedicated haulers, and independent owner operators. Check accuracy for detention time being charged.
  • Maximize freight efficiencies of both internal fleet and dedicated haulers enabling the most costefficient method of movement of materials.
  • Negotiate freight rates with owner/operators & other trucking firms.
  • Obtain prices from various truck brokers to support commercial operations in movement of longer haul NF shipments either incoming or outgoing.
  • Must be able to provide daily contact with individuals who come to the L/M office.
  • Track the amount of ASR being delivered to the landfill.
  • Records of all the registrations, VIN numbers, and license plate numbers must be kept on file and updated when necessary, including trailers leased to owner operators.
  • File and maintain copies of the all owner operators trailers interchange agreements, insurances certificates.
  • File and maintain Trailer annual inspections.
  • Make sure that all the company vehicles and their drivers are in possession of their appropriate paperwork and all the necessary safety equipment, such as; spill kit, first aid kit, triangles, flares, gloves, hard hat, steel tip work shoes, etc.
  • Conduct monthly safety meetings with the company drivers.
  • The employee may be assigned to special projects or required to perform other duties not listed above, which may vary from time to time as determined by management, to meet company needs.
  • Coordinate, track & schedule all inbound & outbound Rail Traffic.

Minimum Requirements and Skills:


Experience:

Experience in scrap yard desired. A minimum of three year's experience with dispatching trucks is preferred.


Education:

High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.


Skills:
Must be computer literate & have basic Microsoft Office experience to design & input various reports. Must have basic knowledge of various types of scrap metal. Must have good phone etiquette to deal with customers. Dispatching & broker skills desirable (i.e. arranging for materials truckers & negotiating fees).
