THE POSITION:


DESCRIPTION OF WORK:


A Legal Assistant 1 provides legal clerical work including the processing and scheduling of appeals and fair hearings involving actions taken by both the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services and Department of Aging.


Duties include reviewing and analyzing incoming appeals for compliance with procedural regulations, recommending dismissal of non-compliant appeals, reviewing correspondence and legal documents to determine the issue on appeal, and forwarding, handling, responding, or filing as appropriate.

You compute and adjust deadlines, prioritize work, and provide appropriate reminders to Administrative Law Judges (ALJs) to ensure the timely processing of appeals.

Also, you determine the parties who require notification of hearing, withdrawal, reschedule, and disposition of appeals; and make recommendations to ALJs to grant or deny continuances or reschedules.

In addition, you review adjudications inconsistencies and errors, then bring your findings to the attention of the supervisor or assigned ALJ and analyze appeals for Limited English Proficiency, documents LEP, and request translation of documents as appropriate.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:


  • Fulltime employment, 37.5hour work week
  • Work hours are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday
  • Friday, with 60minute lunch.

Telework:Upon successful completion of your probationary period and/or training period, part-time telework may be considered. Your work assignments will primarily take place in the office. However, telework may be available based upon individual eligibility and the operational needs of the bureau. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.

  • This location offers off street parking at no additional cost.

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:


  • Three years of responsible clerical, enforcement or investigative work;
    or:
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training
