***The Director of Safety is responsible for directing and providing health and safety program oversight the company. The position oversees development and implementation of behavior-based safety practices, audits functions for health and safety procedure implementation, ensures compliance with corporate, OSHA, Coast Guard, and client safety requirements, and conducting root-cause analysis of health and safety incidents. The Director of Safety monitors and documents the effectiveness of safety control measures used throughout the company and directs Rhoads staff and subcontractors in the implementation of Rhoads' Health and Safety Program. The position will manage the development of site-specific health and safety plans for Rhoads' locations as well as customer projects.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide health and safety leadership and direction to Division, Department and Project Managers.
  • Manage health and safety resources and related departmental budgets.
  • Manage corporate health and safety staff. When necessary, plan, request, and assist in the hiring of new personnel.
  • Serve as the primary contact on health and safety issues.
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with Rhoads' customers, Site Health and Safety Managers, and subcontractors.
  • Create manage and review site specific safety plans (SSSP), Job Hazard Analysis, Activity Hazard Analysis.
  • Appraise and implement new safety regulations as they relate to Rhoads' operations.
  • Ensure that project personnel are adequately trained in emergency response plan procedures.
  • Work as the internal incident manager, ensuring that safety emergencies and injuries are properly
  • Oversee, manage and ensure safety orientation for all new Rhoads personnel and visitors as applicable; Reviews safety training and recommend revisions, improvements, and updates; organizes and conduct safety training as necessary.
  • Assist in the preparation of new work proposals as solicitations relate to corporate health and safety objectives.
  • Reviews all contract documents related to ongoing or proposed work for safety related issues.
  • Review subcontractor safety programs; ensure that subcontractor programs are compliant with corporate, OSHA, client or Coast Guard Safety regulations.
  • Participate in meetings with field personnel, such as preaward and preconstruction conferences.
  • Conduct safety audits. Audits will include a brief summary report noting any deviations from the HASP and corrective actions that may be necessary to promote the health and safety of workers and the public.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local safety laws, regulations, codes, and rules.
  • Chairperson of the Safety Committee.
  • Identifies opportunities to minimize workplace injuries, accidents, and health problems.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:
Bachelor's degree in health and Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health, or related field preferred.


EXPERIENCE:
Prefer a minimum 10 year safety related experience. Marine and water-based operations and heavy construction/industrial/DOD background is preferred.


QUALIFICATIONS:


Extensive knowledge of current company safety policies and applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards across all standards; ability to differentiate between applicable standards (1910, 1915, 1926, EM , etc.)



  • OSHA 30 certification within the last five (5) years.
  • Current shipyard competent person training or willingness to obtain.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • 40hour HAZWOPER certificate and current annual 8hour HAZWOPER refresher
  • CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to conduct training.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Ability to work independently as well as to function effectively and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills; detail oriented and efficient.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and responsibilities in a rapidly growing organization; experience managing personnel.
  • Ability to communicate requirements in an industrial environment, and to give effective direction by using written and/or verbal skills where appropriate.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


  • The performance of this position involves exposure to construction or industrial areas where the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, hard hats and hearing protection is required.
  • Must be able to work in a variety of physical positions, including sitting, standing, walking, and driving in an automobile
  • Will require walking and standing on irregular, uneven surfaces in an industrial setting and possibly at increased hei
