Duties:


Serves as a Public Safety Dispatcher, provides emergency police, fire and medical services to the public by answering emergency 911 calls and responding with appropriate personnel and equipment.

Maintains an accurate status of all emergency response equipment and personnel to assure prompt and accurate response. This equipment includes police, firefighting, hazardous materials, technical rescue and ambulance. Provides Emergency Medical Dispatch Life Support care through pre-arrival instructions to callers.

Conditions of Employment:


  • Obtain and maintain within 6 months of employment DoD Telecommunicator I and II certification(or equivalent).
  • Obtain and maintain within 6 months of employment DoD Hazmat Awareness and Operations certification.
  • Obtain and maintain within 6 months of employment certification in Basic Life Support CPR.
  • Obtain and maintain within 6 months of employment certification in Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN), National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (NLETS) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification.
  • Obtain and maintain within 12 months of employment certification in Emergency Police Dispatch, Emergency Fire Dispatch, and Emergency Medical Dispatch.
  • The incumbent is responsible for attaining continuing dispatch education (CDE) requirements through inservice training. The incumbent must maintain an overall compliance score in the performance of duties of 90 percent, or better.
  • Work requires up to 12hour rotating shifts which includes days, nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Incumbent is required to work (weather essential) regardless of weather conditions, Terrorist Force Protection Condition (TFPCON) or installation closure and to report to the duty station at the regularly scheduled time.
  • This position requires a NACI background check.
  • Subject to call back, oncall, and mandatory overtime as the mission requires.

  • This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.
  • Obtain and maintain within 6 months of employment certification in Advance Fire Services Dispatching, Advance Police Services dispatching, and Nonemergency Call Handling.
  • Obtain and maintain within 6 months of employment certification in Domestic Violence Intervention, Suicide Intervention, 911 Liability, Hazmat Preparedness for Dispatchers, and Advance Public Safety Dispatching.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes answering emergency 911 calls; dispatching appropriate equipment based upon knowledge of the various types of equipment/vehicles required for different emergency situations; performing intervention with distraught emergency callers during high risk situations until appropriate emergency response units arrive on the scene; providing instruction to callers on emergency medical procedures; monitoring computerized dispatch, fire alarm systems; operating automated record systems to maintain reports and retrieve information. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
