Position Description


The Manager of Faculty Development will develop and oversee the implementation of a program of training for DCE faculty and TAs across the full range of course formats and teaching styles and will lead a team offering consulting to individual faculty on the choice of teaching format and on continuous improvement of their teaching in a variety of formats.


The Manager of Faculty Development will also oversee the implementation of a course and teaching quality evaluation process that will include student course evaluations as well as other metrics and evaluation instruments.

The person in this position will lead a team that identifies courses in need of quality improvement and provide individual interventions.


DCE has over 400 faculty members offering nearly 850 online courses per year, and this position has primary responsibility for the training and onboarding of these faculty as well as overseeing the quality of all of these courses.

The person in this position works closely with members of the DCE Teaching and Learning team and with DCE program heads and administrator to support faculty teaching practices.


Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Manage a team of faculty development specialists who will conduct training and provide teaching support for new and returning faculty.
  • Design, develop and deliver trainings, workshops and courses for faculty. Also develop selfserve materials with targeted teaching tips.
  • Meet with new faculty to assess which format for online learning best meets their pedagogical goals.
  • Design and oversee evaluation of course quality. Provides/oversees interventions where necessary.
  • Collaborate on research projects designed to assess quality, improve teaching practices or other topics that can improve online learning at DCE.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 7 years' relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Master's degree preferred
  • Experience in faculty development, course design, or other related field
  • Knowledge of and experience with multiple forms of online learning
  • Demonstrated experience learning technologies
  • Ability to form strong, collaborative partnerships with faculty members
  • Teaching experience preferred

Working Conditions
Primarily Mon-Fri, 9-5pm, though must be able to work some evenings and weekends.

Work Format Details
This position will be based in Cambridge, MA. Hybrid workplace models in place at DCE with a minimum of 2 days per week on campus. DCE may adjust these as necessary or appropriate.

All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only).

  • The Division of Continuing Education (DCE) comprises four academic units serving about 30,000 domestic and international students annually, which allow Harvard to meet the learning needs of intellectually curious and highly motivated students from high school through retirement. Established in 1910, the Harvard Extension School (HES) offers access to Harvard faculty for a diverse community of adult learners, enrolling about 15,000 students. HES offers over 1,000 open enrollment courses — 85 percent of which are accessible online — and provides flexibility through noncredit, undergraduate, and graduate courses, including degrees, certificates, and a premedical program.
