Job Summary

The Department of Music at Jacksonville State University (Jax State) invites applications for an adjunct music theory instructor. An adjunct is needed to teach music theory, aural skills and direct the Jax State Civic Symphony. Our department offers undergraduate programs of study in Music Education, Music Performance, and General Music. In addition, the department offers graduate programs in General Music and Music Education. A minimum of 18 graduate hours in the discipline is required.

Experience teaching online and in traditional classroom courses is desired.

Academically JSU offers 101 academic programs and concentrations, including bachelor's, master's, post-baccalaureate, doctoral and advanced certificate programs in a variety of disciplines that prepare graduates for meaningful careers and ongoing education. More than 40 online programs are offered. The University features six colleges on its 459-acre campus - Arts, Humanities, and Sciences; Business and Industry; Education and Professional Studies; Health Professions and Wellness; Social and Behavioral Sciences and Library. Department Information

The mission of the David L. Walters Department of Music is to develop musicians who are aware of the past, engaged in the present, anticipating the future, and capable of leading and making musical contributions in whatever community or walk of life they choose. We offer professional training and promote scholarship among students in the discipline of music, sharing the expertise of our faculty in the training of music educators and performers. We recognize the interdependence among performance studies, music education and the theoretical and historical aspects of musical study, and we strive to instill excellence in each of these areas. We provide leadership for the region, and serve the musical needs of the University, the general college student, campus cultural goals, and the larger surrounding community through ensembles, solo performances, and curricular offerings.

A diverse and inspiring faculty trained at some of the nation's premier institutions are active as performers, scholars, composers, and teachers. Students have rare opportunities to work closely with and learn from these artist-teachers individually and in a wide variety of ensemble, seminar, and classroom settings. An energetic student body is fully engaged in a wide variety of musical performance and learning activities, and all gain significant experience by playing key leadership roles within them.

Required Qualifications

18 graduate credit hours in the discipline
Traditional classroom teaching experience.
Experience with in-person, hybrid and online instruction.

The preferred applicant will possess a Master's degree in Music Theory/Composition.
