  • Under general supervision, performs routine to difficult professional engineeringrelated duties for a number of functional areas, including CIP project planning/design, engineering and construction project management, environmental resource planning and compliance monitoring, maintenance/reliability engineering, and recycled water systems; and performs related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Associate Engineer is the journey-level professional class in the engineering class series. Incumbents perform the full range of engineering work and analyses requiring strong technical knowledge and sound independent judgment and initiative. Work is performed with limited supervision and direction, and results are reviewed for quality and accuracy of plans and recommendations. Assistant Engineers may be considered for advancement to Associate Engineer after demonstrating the ability to successfully perform the full range of duties of the latter class.

  • Associate Engineer is distinguished from Senior Associate Engineer in that incumbents in the latter class are responsible for leading and participating in the most complex engineering projects, programs and activities.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides crossdivision assistance on engineering issues and projects; performs standard calculations and prepares engineering estimates of time/materials costs; assists outside agencies and businesses on engineering, planning and operational concerns; assists in coordinating engineering projects with other utilities and member agencies.
  • Prepares a variety of reports and correspondence on technical engineering matters.
  • Serves as engineering project manager for assigned projects; may negotiate and oversee consultant engineering firms; prepares cost estimates, scopes of work, project schedules and budgets; manages consultant contracts and reviews consultant output for compliance with Agency standards; reviews requests for change orders; prepares project status reports and reviews with management.
  • Interprets applicable laws, regulations, policies and engineering standards.
