Colonial Pipeline is the largest refined products pipeline in the United States, transporting more than 100 million gallons or 2.5 million barrels per day.

Colonial transports various grades of gasoline, diesel fuel, home heating oil, jet fuel, and fuels for the U.S. military through a pipeline system.

Colonial transports approximately 45 percent of all fuel consumed on the East Coast, providing refined products to more than 50 million Americans.

About the Field Operator (Associate, I, II) Position


What You Get to Do:

  • Associate Operators participates in Colonial's NexGen Training programs and attends Company coordinated classes and seminars to enhance technical skills/knowledge. Once trained and qualified, the Associate will be expected to perform operations in order to demonstrate skill and gain practical experience. Operate various types of tools and equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Field Operators provide technical oversight of Pipeline Operations. Perform pipeline controls desk operations, supports local operations, and perform tasks involving general maintenance, preventative maintenance or minor repair of pipeline and station assets.
  • Field Operators II independently perform daily inventories, regulatory checklists, inspections, pig launches and receipt, inventory, minor maintenance, equipment certifications and labeling and other facility, or pipeline operations activities. Provide daytoday oversight and guidance to less experienced team members. Identifies and resolves operational issues.
  • Perform covered tasks as defined under 49 CFR b); and incumbents must be qualified to perform the covered tasks associated with their role as well as recognize and react to abnormal operating conditions in accordance with Colonial's Operator Qualification Program.

What You Bring to the Table:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) from an accredited education intuition.
  • Live within a 60minute commute of the work location.
  • Valid Driver's License and acceptable driving record to drive Company and personal vehicles for picking up materials, to get around large facilities in minimum time, and to travel to locations away from headquarter point.

  • Associate and/or Technical degree in a related field of study from an accredited college or university; will consider a combination of experience and/or education.
  • Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (Hazpower) training
  • Forklift training/licensing
  • Fire training
  • Ideally, 1+ years of experience in the Associate Operator position.
  • Experience in HMI, software systems and batch scheduling.
  • Successful completion of Associate Operator NexOp Program and completion of all required operator qualifications.
  • Ideally, 4+ years of experience in the Operator job series. Fully qualified as a Field or Area Operator I.
  • At facilities with multiple operating consoles, and be qualified on two or more consoles.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Skill Set I, II, and III of the NexOp Program; successful completion of Skill Set IV.


Colonial adheres to PHMSA's (Pipeline Hazardous Material Safety Administration) Control Room Management Rule, and as such, incumbents in this role must live within 60 minutes (90 minutes for previously grandfathered employees) from their designated work location and notify management of any changes to their home address while in this role.


Physical Requirements & Work Conditions:
Physical mobility to sit, stand, reach, pull, push, and bend. Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. unassisted. Ability to work in non-permit required confined spaces. Ability to traverse uneven terrain to reach secluded right-of-way. Ability to climb stairs, vertical ladders up to 10 ft. and tank steps as high as 60 ft. without assistance. Ability to verbally communicate by two-way radio, especially during emergency response. Normal visual acuity to perform duties of position.
