Overview:

The salary range for this position is $ $31.21 per hour depending upon qualifications and is non-negotiable.

Flexible work hours when needed is a must - days, nights, weekends, holidays, and some overtime.

This position is part of the SAG-AFTRA bargaining unit with KPBS.
KPBS serves the greater San Diego community with informative, cultural, entertaining and educational television, radio, and web programming. KPBS TV/FM is the public television and radio stations for San Diego.

Licensed to San Diego State University, KPBS supports and furthers the university's educational and community service mission by informing, enlightening and empowering its listeners.

It does so not only by presenting national and locally produced programming of value to its San Diego audience, but also by producing programming about San Diego and its people for distribution nationwide.


Under supervision of the Production Manager, the Master Control Technician is responsible for master control operations and television support, maintaining and operating the S-ENG Truck and participating as technical crew in special shows and events projects in KPBS studio productions.


Providing technical support for a complex telecommunications facility, the KPBS Operations & Production Services Department is responsible for all aspects of radio and television production including oversight of all electronic media production, recording and transmission needs for the station.

Responsibilities:

The KPBS Operations department has a customer-service oriented focus, serving all viewers, clients, inhouse, and out-of-house customers.

The incumbent will need to work well under the deadlines of time constraints, and achieve the best quality possible in an efficient and timely manner.

Communication skills are important in successfully interpreting the needs of the Programming, Traffic, Operations & Production Services, and other KPBS departments.

Professional broadcast quality work that meets station and network technical specifications is essential.


Master Control Operations Support (75%)

  • Execute the tasks necessary to deliver KPBS programming streams to the KPBS audience as directed.
  • Operation and monitoring of Public Media Management (PMM) Broadcast Automation System; editing equipment, graphics equipment, switchers, media asset databases, satellite receivers, fiber feed equipment, tape archival systems and accompanying PC's.
  • Ingest, trim and setup for proper On Air playout of locally originated program files.
  • Work closely with Programming and Traffic departments to ensure details of programs meet technical specifications, quality standards, correct timing and scheduling.
  • Monitor TV/Radio Transmitters and complete TV Transmitter logs and fulfills EAS requirements.
  • Perform technical evaluation of program recordings to assure compliance with station and network technical standards.
  • Perform firstline corrective maintenance and routine preventive maintenance on the various electronic systems and technical equipment. Incumbent will report equipment failures when intensive corrective maintenance procedures are required.
  • Assist and inform Engineering staff of any technical issues.
  • Assist the Production Manager with new business development and station projects or initiatives

Television Operations Support (10%)
Support Studio productions and other special shows and events including but not limited to:

  • Daily News programming.
  • Pre-Recorded and Live locally produced programs
  • Telethons
  • Distance Learning
  • FundRaising Pledge Productions
  • Awards Presentations
  • Productions for outside Clients and Underwriters

S-ENG Truck Maintenance and Operations (5%)

  • Responsible for driving truck to remote locations and identifying line of sight access to ViaSat satellite
  • Oversee all operations whole at remote location; system and connection startup, satellite antenna
